[RECAP] World Wide Meetup - CORONA Vs Local Guides

More than one-third of the world population is under lockdown due to CORONA COVID-19 virus outbreak. We have seen deadly virus movie outbreaks in Movies but those movies have become real-life now. I organized the meet up with the following objectives in mind.

  • Chase the victim mindset out from fellow local guides
  • Discuss What we could do as Local Guides to battle CORONA
  • How we could contribute to maps while being safe and secure during these troubled times.
  • How we could turn this unfortunate situation to a productive opportunity.

I started meetup at 8pm IST time Initially right on time LGs from all corners around the world start to join. So many joining requests stated flood. in I had to outsource join request approval job to my fellow LG partner Kasunaaa

We state by going around introducing ourselves. Name, LG level, and Country. There we LGs from Indonesia, Ukraine, Germany, Ukraine, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Russia, Cyprus, Bangladesh , Senegal, Brazil, Nigeria and Estonia. It was like a mini UNITED NATIONS summit. :grinning: :joy: The total participant count hit 60 or somewhere very near there.

After getting to know, we started speaking about we started discussing about current situation in our countries. @JaneBurunina provided an update from Ukraine. It was somewhat a relief to hear that situation there is under control and they are continuing safety measures by working from home arrangements. TorM gave us news from Germany. It was great to hear that they are helping out neighbor countries while handling the situation inside Germany. However, Torum said that it is spreading in Germany and they are paying more attention to the local situation now. Nyainurjanah provided an update from Indonesia. She said they are not yet under lockdown and they are going to work as usual. But they are taking safety measures as much as possible. @TravellerG provided the situation from India and Kashif gave the update on Pakistan. Both of them were worried about the fast-spreading in their countries. ilankovan provided information from Sri Lanka and he was thankful for current safety measures taken in the country. Likewise, we got updates from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Cyprus, etc…

Then we directed our discussion towards how we could contribute to maps while being safe during this troubled time. @KashifMisidia from Pakistan told us that we can do a cleanup in the map and contributions. Then fact checks, and reviews you forgot to provide. @TorM said that he going through his old photo archives and uploading the photos he forgot to upload before. Kasunaaa joined that saying that he is doing the same. # TravelerG mentioned that we should start to spend time cleaning up our accounts. If any mistakes you have done it’s a good time to identify and correct them. He also shared a CORONA safety self-check so everyone can do their own safety check as a precaution.

Summary points from the discussion on how to contribute to maps during this time

  • Cleanup your LG accounts. Correct any mistakes
  • Review the missed places from your visited places
  • Revisit your old photo archives and upload forgotten photos to the maps.
  • Do fact checks, quick question answerers.

Then we moved to our next topic.

How we could turn this unfortunate situation to a useful opportunity for us.

I wanted to direct the conversation towards acquiring new skills learning new things. Our LGs have interesting ideas. Kasun told us he started his old painting hobby and reading books. @Rumal95 said he has started improving his digital Art skills and suggest everyone to improve on photo editing, and video editing skills. @AlphaSays (Alpha) suggests that we should start cooking and learn new recipes. Sithara suggested that we could start improving on our writing skills with free time maybe write more articles on connect. @Aboda_Noah suggested that we could follow some courses and he is following a course on how to learn well and communicate well. He also shared some links to free learning material. Ajith Memolin provided lots of information, about Google neighborly features available for India. Ajith gave a very important suggestion, use this time to bond with your relatives, friends you couldn’t speak for a long time. Repair those relationships or friendships. Then Ajith gave links to some free Google courses we could follow during this period. Suyash Kadam said we could use this time to learn a new language and he is trying German.

Summary points on how we can make this an opportunity for the betterment of ourselves

  • Revisit your forgotten useful hobbies which made you happy
  • Start learning a new language
  • Start learning new skills like cooking, gardening
  • Start an online course or two(There are lot of free offers during this lockdown )
  • Start Reading books.
  • Plan your side business, your great business idea which you didn’t have time before
  • Call your relatives, friends who were not in contact and use this time to bond and repair those relationships

Then we started talking about our connect live 2020 application experience. I shared my application video and others also spoke about their experience. @Alpha told us he had to shoot for 3 hours to get a 1min video out because of the strong wind disturbances at his house near the port.** @IlankovanT **shared his crazy experience shooting the application video just before the Curfew deadline. And he shared some of his memorable experiences from previous connect live. NetaBC from and Shruti from India also share there LG experiences and what it means to them. @NitaBC brought an interesting perspective saying that mothers have become busier because kids are at home all the time due to school closure but she is learning Spanish. Shrutiupadhyay_u and NetaBC told that they were really intrigued by the lot of new ideas and suggestions given by everyone.

Then we said our good buys and wrapped up the meetup.
