Recap : What's New on Connect? [virtual Meetup]

Hey All,

The new Connect platform is currently trending :zap: among Local Guides! While everyone is learning new tips and tricks, @Sagarkanherkar hosted a virtual meetup to discuss what’s new in Connect on 2nd November, co-hosted by @RosyKohli ma’am and @Shrut19 taai
Around 40 people joined over Google Meet.

Since it was Diwali, the meetup started with Diwali greetings :diya_lamp: :boom: and some festive fun :hugs:.

Many Local Guides shared their thoughts about Connect, what they like in new version and what they miss from the old version. A lot of people loved the easy tagging feature, the separate section of meetups.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when creating a new post:

  • Use your own captured photos.
  • Write your content in your own words.
  • Feel free to write in your own language.
  • Tag Google Maps links in each post to avoid spamming.

Thanks to @TusharSuradkar , @TravellerG @Globe_trotter_Ish, @NareshDarji for their useful insights in between.

Thank you, Sagar dada, for hosting such a meaningful and informative meetup! And thanks to everyone for making it an engaging session with active participation.

If I missed mentioning anyone who attended, please feel free to tag me in the comments! Apologies for any names I missed.

I love the new UI, it’s so much more user-friendly!
My favorites are the tagging feature, and easy post previews for now. There’s still a lot to explore!

What do you like in the new Connect? Let us know in the comments!

I can only imagine the huge efforts gone into compiling this wonderful recap @SaylliWalve1
It is difficult to remember everyone, especially in online meetups. Great job summarizing :+1:
The recap is meticulously crafted and nicely presented.

Hat’s off to the the amazing @Sagarkanherkar to come up with this much-needed meetup and wise selection of topics and the cohost @RosyKohli Ji who brings cheer and energy to every meetup she attends, virtually or in person.

Great brainstorming over the new Connect.
Let’s continue this series in the future.

Thank you so much for the kind words😊 @TusharSuradkar Daa

Yes, AI can transcribe, but it’ll never quite capture those little moments and insights that only humans can notice. Long live old-school note-taking

I’m so glad you enjoyed the recap. Remembering everyone in an online meetup is definitely a challenge.

It was truly a great discussion on the new Connect, and I’m excited to see this series continue. :handshake:

It felt very heavy when using the new connect. It felt very heavy that you gave the curiosity of all the local gate about the new correct through the post. @SaylliWalve1

Congrats to a successful meet-up @Sagarkanherkar @RosyKohli and @Shrut19 !! And nice recap @SaylliWalve1 ! I hope that everyone had a great time with Diwali and also discussing the new Connect and sharing experiences, tips and tricks!

@TusharSuradkar is already aware of this and may have mentioned this about recaps but I’ll repeat anyway.

When an event is over, there will be a Create recap button appearing in the meet-up info panel as seen in the screenshot below:

This button will only show until the first recap is submitted so we highly encourage the host of the meet-up (or someone that you’ve picked to write the recap) to tap on that button and post the recap. Since writing a recap topic can take some time, we recommend submitting a placeholder post as quickly as possible to reserve that first recap.

A placeholder post can be something like this:
“This is a placeholder text for the recap of this meet-up. Please check back soon for the full recap. Thanks”

Once the first recap is submitted, the button will change to View recap.

Currently, we are encouraging all attendees who have attended the same meet-up who want to write their own recaps to submit their recap as a reply to the first recap. This keeps the forum more organised and having all related recaps included in the replies. So, you might see me merge other related recaps into this

You may also notice that there is a special tag, Meet-up recap, for the first recap post and there is a special feed for recap posts.

Only topics with that special tag will appear in the Recaps feed. If you write a topic and add “recap” into the title, that won’t be enough to push it into the Recaps feed. Hence, the encouragement from moderators to merge related recap posts to the very first recap post! I hope the explanation is clear!

Note: It’s still early days for this new Connect and the Local Guides team are getting feedback on whether this method of merging all recaps under the first recap is better or not. Let’s give it a try for a while (it’s also new for us Connect Mods!) and if things feel better the “old” way, we can discuss with the Google team on making changes.

On November 2 @Sagarkanherkar hosted a virtual meet-up with co-hosts @Shrut19 and @RosyKohli

The agenda of the meet-up was to discuss what’s new on connect and share personal experience of using the new connect.

We had a very good discussion about the new connect features like tagging, separate section for meetup, emoji feature etc.

Moderators @TusharSuradkar @NareshDarji @Globe_trotter_Ish shared amazing insights like adding Google maps link to the post in order to avoid spamming.

We took screenshots, wished everyone a very Happy Diwali and shared views on what’s new in connect.
