Recap: [Virtual] Nigeria, November 15, [Virtual] Accessibility without borders: Local Efforts, Global Impact

We had an interesting webinar to connect, enlighten, and inspire local guides to take active part in Accessibility Advocacy as part of the One Accessibility Initiative.

It was an inspiring session, hearing from @doc_dells an accessibility champion from Indonesia. She shared her local guides journey regarding accessibility starting from the days of her undergraduate studies and the way forward.

The highlights of the event are;

1. Start small but consistent; When asked about one small, local action you recommend to anyone today to immediately improve accessibility in their own community. Dels emphasized on the importance of little efforts. Every review matters as well as a photo added.
2. Some misconceptions people have about accessibility is that they think it’s just for persons with disabilities. While accessibility is for everyone; a nursing mother, the elderly, children, youths, business owners and PWDs.
3. Communities can take active part in accessibility by creating awareness through various campaigns and initiatives. Also, collaborations with the government and other organizations. The use of social media is another powerful tool to create more insights and awareness on accessibility.

Local guides had the opportunity to ask questions.

​I’m so glad the highlights resonated. As we discussed during the session, starting small but staying consistent is key! Every review and photo added really does matter. I also loved that you captured the point I made during the session regarding misconceptions; accessibility isn’t just for persons with disabilities. It truly is a universal need that benefits everyone, including nursing mothers, the elderly, and children. This perfectly reflects the theme of ‘Accessibility without borders’, a message that has remained consistent across the campaigns of the One Accessibility team .
​It was inspiring to see the active part communities can take in creating awareness through this campaign. A big shoutout to the One Accessibility Team and everyone who attended for making this such a meaningful dialogue!
