Recap: [Virtual] March 01, Celebrating 20 Years of Google Maps: Google Maps and International Mother Language Day

Hello everyone!

On March 1st, 2025, we kicked off a wonderful virtual meetup, celebrating the big 20th birthday of Google Maps and International Mother Language Day (which is officially celebrated on February 21st, but we decided to celebrate it on March 1st). With 61 participants joining us from all over the world, it was a demonstration of the power of connection and shared passion.

As the holy month of Ramadan had just begun, we opened our meetup with heartfelt greetings, extending warm wishes and blessings to those observing this blessed month.

The meetup started at 11 AM (CST), as scheduled earlier. We started by exploring the fascinating history of Google Maps, tracing its evolution from its humble beginnings on February 8th, 2005, to the indispensable tool it is today. We explored its milestones, innovations, and the profound impact it has had on how we navigate and experience the world.

The heart of our celebration, however, was our interactive language guessing game. This was where the true magic happened! We had some awesome Local Guides share phrases in their native languages, challenging everyone to listen, interpret, and guess the meaning. The room buzzed with excitement as we heard the harmonious sounds of Spanish, the rhythmic flow of Urdu, the mesmerizing tone of Sindh, the intriguing sound of Indonesian, the warm cadence of Marathi, the distinct tones of Turkish, the familiar lilt of Hindi, the dynamic and melodic tones of Yoruba and the expressive nuances of Bangla, all alongside the universal language of English.

It was a total blast, and we got to see how diverse and amazing our community is. When we translated everything into English, there were lots of laughs and “aha!” moments. It was a great way to show how language brings us together. The guessing game aspect added a fun, interactive layer that kept everyone engaged and entertained.

The chat was alive with comments and reactions, reflecting the genuine enthusiasm and connection among participants. We saw the true spirit of Local Guides shine through, with everyone eager to share, learn, and celebrate together.

To capture the joy and camaraderie of our event, we concluded with a lively virtual photo session. Smiles filled the screen, creating a lasting memory of our shared celebration.

Before adjourning the meetup, I extended my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of the participants for joining us and contributing to making this meetup so memorable. The event was a great success, a tribute to the power of technology to bring people together, celebrate cultural diversity, and foster a sense of global community.

We look forward to future opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate together!

You can see the photos in this album.

We concluded the meetup precisely at 12 PM, staying true to our scheduled time. The event was a resounding success, a testament to the power of technology to bring people together, celebrate cultural diversity, and foster a sense of global community.

Thank you to each and every one of you who joined us and contributed to making this meetup so memorable. We look forward to future opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate together!
