Sending some wishes to the sky on Vesak day from Batticaloa, Sri Lanka!
Vesak this time was super exciting not only to us Batticaloa Local Guides, but also to the public of Batticlaloa. While planning our Vesak day celebration with Batticaloa local guides, I decided to buy some sky lanterns while on my way to hometown for Vesak holidays. Sky lanterns are new to Batticaloa to be honest. There were a lot of participants present and were ready to attend the meet up when I reached Gandhi Park.
Even before reaching the site, I started getting a lot of calls confirming their presence at this meet-up. Everyone was excited to see the sky lanterns. Even I was. Watching at them traveling up… up… and up… and at an endpoint, they go invisible… gives you such an overwhelming inner feeling. I have been fancying the sky and the sky lanterns a lot of times; about where they go and what will be their ending altitude.
Being excited of the meet-up, we all started launching our first lantern around 7.30 pm. Soon once the first lantern risen up the sky, quite a lot of people gathered around and they started inquiring about what’s happening here and who we were. As always, we explained about Batticaloa local guides and our fun-filled meet-up’s. From kids to elders, there were quite a lot of people gathered around. It was a fun-filled gathering that night, rather than a formal meet up. Also, there were some guys who wanted to volunteer lighting up that lamp. We gave them few chances too. To be more precise, Gandhi Park looked like a carnival that night with the enthusiasm spread from us Batticaloa Local guides. Have a look at some photos of the gorgeous sky and the sky lantern.
