[RECAP] Salah El-Din Citadel, Cairo Photo Walk

Welcome to our recap of the 5th Egypt Local Guides meeting which held on March 22nd, 2019, took place in the amazing historical place in Egypt’s capital Cairo.

Being built since more than 800 years should bring a lot of excitement to explore such a historical place, it was a must be location for our group meeting.

Our meeting started at 11 AM in a nice sunny day, where all the participants met at the citadel main gate at Salah Salem road. Of course, all the Egypt’s moderators were present, and we got the chance to meet and greet our first-time-to-attend members.

We started the walk within 5 min. where our first stop was at “Al Nassr Ibn Kalawon Mosque which was built in the 14th-century. For more info about it, please check Wikipedia here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Nasir_Muhammad_Mosque

We followed it with the “Mosque of Muhammad Ali”, which is the main iconic place for the Salah El-Din citadel’s area, and most people refers by mistake its photo as the citadel’s one, which is incorrect!

Muhammad Ali’s mosque was built between 1830 and 1848 and it was built by a Turkish architect based on “Sultan Ahmed Mosque” model.

It was a good timing to arrive the mosque during the Friday’s Muslims pray, where it’s the weekly call for the gathering pray at the mid-noon time.

After the pray, we continued our walk with exploring and taking photos the mosque’s area.

Also, this spot is built on one of the highest points in Cairo, where it gives a good opportunity to capture some good photos of the old Cairo’s area and with faraway Giza Pyramids.

Unfortunately, due to renovation we couldn’t be able to visit “The Carriage museum” nor “The Gawhara Palace”.

But we were lucky to visit the ancient “Police Museum” and the very old prison area.

Then the last place was the Military museum, where there were some military monuments from the different ages.

After the long walk, we opt to have a rest at the citadel’s café, where we have discussed various topics related to the map spam, editing and of course the most anticipated Connect Live 2019 event in San Jose application. We all started to departure at 4 PM, carrying some great memories of such a great place and the nice LGs gathering.

Wait for our next meetings soon!

Well done on your meetup @ShadySalama and great recap! Looks like you all had a great time! The Wikipedia link for the Al Nassr Ibn Kalawon Mosque seems to be missing though. Anyway, thanks for the share and the link to the photo album. It’s always great to see what other Local Guides are doing all over the world!

Hello @ShadySalama
Thank you for the wonderful meet-up review! In our culture, such a beige unified city is very rare!
There are many things we do not know, so please introduce us from now on!

@ShadySalama - congrats on your 5th Local Guides meetup!

I smile at the thought of “ancient” and “old” is relative to your city. You have the Pyramids in the background, one Mosque built 800 years ago, another mosque built between in 1830 and 1848, and then recent museums.

As you know America is comparatively young to what your one afternoon photowalk covered.

Thanks for sharing and providing us with a photowalk of just some of the historic and religious highlights of your city, Cairo. Learned there is more than just pyramids and the ancient hieroglyphics.

Cheers,

Karen

Thanks so much @KarenVChin , your words is very much appreciated !

But trust me, we have covered only one place of many many others in Egypt. And it’s our duty to introduce it all to you.

All my best wishes to you and your cute twins !

You’re welcome @ShadySalama . I am glad you understood what I was trying to say here. =)

I highly encourage - Please, please write and show more photos of what Cairo looks like and what locals do here & Egypt every day.

It helps break the strong beliefs that Egypt only has ancient BC ruins - King Tut and Cleopatra are famous historic figures - and you know there are more than just that.

Cheers,

Karen
