[Recap] - Photo Walk at Kanheri Caves at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, Mumbai, India.

Post lockdown Mumbai has opened up fully under the Mission Begin Again by Government of Maharashtra. Now the management of Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali has opened the Kanheri Caves which was closed for public since last two years. Hence, I conducted Photo Walk meet up at Kanheri Caves at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Borivali, Mumbai, India. As it was Diwali vacation so I was the only LG present there.

Here is the link of my invitation. I reached around 9 am at the entry of the Gate.

The main objective of this meet up was to conduct Photo Walk and update the information on maps.

Following activities were performed on Google maps:

  1. Marked as Open.

  2. Clicked the photos of caves and various locations including accessibility features and uploaded on maps.

  3. Checked any spams on maps about the place and report.

  4. Clicked 360 deg. photos and uploaded on maps.

Kanheri Caves which is under control of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is situated in North Mumbai near Borivali on Sashti island. It was constructed around from 1st Century C.E. to 10th Century C.E. This caves consists of Buddhist Sculpture, paintings, inscriptions, carvings etc. We can see on maps that this caves is located at the center of the forest.

Kanheri name seems to be derived from word Krishna Giri. Krishan means Black and Giri means Mountain. This caves are constructed in Black Stone in the Mountain. Caves shows the Art and Culture of the Buddhism Era. There were Viharas, Halls, Meditation Rooms, Stupa constructed for Monks and Citizens. That time monks were used to arrange Buddhist conference. In reference to this a Buddhist conference is held every year at this cave.

It’s very astonished to see such outstanding caves carvings. There is also a Water Tank constructed on the Top of the Caves for water supply to all caves. In Monsoon, we can see the actual water flows to all the caves. Really its worth to such a engineered work at this caves. You will find Buddha everywhere and feel the peace.

There are total 109 caves. Out of which I visited around 85 caves. Floor of every cave is full rock. Following are the photos of the caves.

Around 1 PM I finished photo walk and enjoyed a fruits at the base of the cave.

360 deg. photos: Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3, Photo 4, Photo 5

How to reach: 7 km from Borivali East Station. Bus No. 188 from Main Gate of Sanjay Gandhi National Park is available to reach up to Caves base.

Accessibility: As seen from the photos about accessibility feature above, the place is accessible up to initial caves i.e. up to 3 caves. Later it is somewhat tedious task.

Near by attraction: Sanjay Gandhi National Park in which you can enjoy Lion/ Tiger safari, Boating, Mini Train, Play Park for children etc.

Conclusion: Photo walk meet up is successfully completed by me. Latest photos of the caves including 360 deg photos are uploaded on maps.

Note: No any vehicle is allowed inside the park, only BEST Bus No. 188 is available up to caves.
