Kanheri Caves which is under control of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is situated in North Mumbai near Borivali on Sashti island. It was constructed around from 1st Century C.E. to 10th Century C.E. This caves consists of Buddhist Sculpture, paintings, inscriptions, carvings etc. We can see on maps that this caves is located at the center of the forest.
Kanheri name seems to be derived from word Krishna Giri. Krishan means Black and Giri means Mountain. This caves are constructed in Black Stone in the Mountain. Caves shows the Art and Culture of the Buddhism Era. There were Viharas, Halls, Meditation Rooms, Stupa constructed for Monks and Citizens. That time monks were used to arrange Buddhist conference. In reference to this a Buddhist conference is held every year at this cave.
It’s very astonished to see such outstanding caves carvings. There is also a Water Tank constructed on the Top of the Caves for water supply to all caves. In Monsoon, we can see the actual water flows to all the caves. Really its worth to such a engineered work at this caves. You will find Buddha everywhere and feel the peace.
There are total 109 caves. Out of which I visited around 85 caves. Floor of every cave is full rock. Following are the photos of the caves.
Around 1 PM I finished photo walk and enjoyed a fruits at the base of the cave.
