[RECAP] Mapping & Accessibility Walk Meetup

Hello dear Local guides!

I would like to share with you my recap of Let’s Map Mykolaiv! Mapping & Accessibility Walk Meetup which I hosted in my home city Mykolaiv, Ukraine on 15 February 2020 (before quarantine period).

I invited Local guides to explore the City Center Shopping Mall in Mykolaiv to identify places with accessibility features and add them to Google Maps, edit information about businesses, to make the map of Mykolaiv more inclusive and relevant.

The City Center is a modern shopping center with a pleasant children’s entertainment area, cafes, restaurants, a cinema, a supermarket and a bowling club. Great place to spend time with family and do shopping.
Let’s explore this place for Accessibility features and know, how it’s accessible for everyone!

We gathered with Local guides near the main entrance to the City Center shopping mall on February 15 at 11am.

At the beginning of the Meetup, we walked around to find Accessible parking spaces, multiple entrances and ramps to restaurants and a bowling club to take photos, collect Accessibility Information for Maps, to answer Accessibility Questions. To learn more about it, please read the post Answering accessibility questions on Google Maps

Then we came inside the City Center and walked around to search accessible facilities to take photos for Maps and collect Accessibility information for our Local guides reviews.

At the same time we checked informations (changing names, hours, websites, removing permanently closed places, duplicates, etc.) concerning businesses to edit them, where appropriate to make Maps relevant.

In general, the City Center is a modern, spacious shopping mall, which mostly offers the necessary facilities for people with disabilities, elderly people, parents with kids to have a great time and do shopping. There are wide open spaces: in most halls there are no doors, no obstacles, no thresholds and steps.

However, special facilities (accessible toilets, baby care room) are available on the ground floor only. If you are at a different level, you can use an elevator or an escalator to get there. In some places, for example, if you go down/up from/to the children’s entertainment center to/from the cafe Atmosphera, there are the steep stairs, which can cause difficulties for elderlies and for people with disabilities.

We finished our Meetup in cafe Atmosphera in lively conversation over a cup of tea.

Seems you have been hosting so many Accessibility Meetups and therefore no time to prepare RECAPs :joy:

I hope you could go out soon and start doing more such activities.

Thank you @ravindus

Hahaha Exactly! I started Virtual Meetups online and didn’t have time enough for recaps…

And now I’m glad that Kashif is hosting Virtual Accessibility Meetups and writing recaps as a host. I can do my Accessibility Metups activities as a Co-host, without writing new recaps

Honestly, I love hosting and attending Meetups, but not writings…

Thank you so much @SebaasC for your kind words!!!

Greetings from Ukraine! :ukraine:
