A Green Journey through the Eastern Coast of Sri Lanka!
Initially, our plan was to plant 200 trees in Manmunai West area of Batticaloa. But, there was no a dearth was forecasted on the follow up of trees after planting them on watering and proper fencing. This area has a lot of stray cattle and if the plant is not well fenced, there are many chances that the plant is being destroyed by these stray cattle. Considering these, we started looking for other options. However, a fellow local guide @ThangavelS came up with a good idea. He proposed that there are several new colonies being established along the coastal belt of Kalkudah and these people are desperately lacking of shades and greenery. So we decided to give away our green gifts to them and started the mission from 7 Oβclock from Batticaloa.
One our way, Sakthiyalingam notified us that there are some other requests for trees from a community organization as well as a commercial organization (An Ayurvedic spa). First, we decided to reach that newly established colony, and there were 55 families living and they wanted each tree per household.
They, with much pleasure, took over the responsibility of planting and caring these trees.
Let me announce another good news here! The Letβs map green initiative is no more a one-man show in Sri Lanka, I got more than ten volunteers who took over the responsibility of planting and uploading the growth progress of trees, and they represent all the regions of Sri Lanka. So each region has at least on representative onboard. In this case, our coordinator for the Eastern Province (which includes Batticaloa) took over the mapping and photo uploading task enthusiastically.
Being indulged by the happiness shown by this community, we reached the above mentioned commercial entity, they took over the responsibility of hundred plants and they were about to Distribute among villagers as a Corporate Social Responsibility. Also, they gave us space to store our plants for a while until we handed over rest of the plants to that community organization. This, gave us a clear relaxation, thinking of the fact that the community as well as certain corporate entities have started thinking green and are joining hands with us. Before we left their premises, they treated us with a fresh mint and lime juice which refreshed our minds and the body after roaming such a long way in the hot sun. Their human resource manager, while talking to us told βI wanted to give you a green juice resembling your good work to the communityβ. Yes! Have a look at the green juice. It was awesome!
Then we gave the remaining 45 plants to the community organization of the Local government. They promised us that they will distribute them properly among the community and monitor their growth progress as well. Our Regional coordinator Meshanth, proudly shook his shoulder and told βI will finish mapping all these two hundred plants by this weekβ. Being indulged by the comfort of accomplishment, we all returned home with hearts overflowing green!!
I want to say BIG THANKS for @DilibAjanthM , @ThangavelS , @KrithikaA , @Kajan746 , Aja, Charles and Meshan for supporting to build a green team
