[Recap] Karachi Food Crawl 2 : Introduction Of A Food Street "Dhoraji Gola Ganda Street"

Hello Local Guides,

This is introduction of another food Street or you can say Gola Ganda Street Of Karachi Namely Dhoraji Gola Ganda Street.

It was sudden plan, but thanks to my friends and fellow local Guides @Naeemurrehman and @siqbal who respond Rapidly and Plan went fantastic.

We reached there at 11pm because that is peak hours for customers and visitors there.

And I would like to say special Thanks to our moderator @VasT who motivated us for this wonderful food/Gola Ganda Crawl.

We Started from Olive Super Market Saylani Chowk.
The road is lit up at night as the carts glow under colourful lights and smiling families come out for a stroll and sweet treat.

As summer heat waves grips the city very barly, residents of Karachi are eager to beat the heat by any means possible. One of the most popular methods is by eating icy treats such as gola ganda.

Ghazi Salahuddin Road in Dhoraji Society famous as Dhoraji Gola Ganda Street is one of the most famous locations in the city for Desserts like gola ganda, limcas and ice cream faloodas. There are around 40 to 50 different stalls/carts on both sides of the road well-stocked on ice, flavouring syrups and fruit and condensed milk cans. There are deep freezers loaded with ice slabs on the footpaths.

They start making gola ganda from 3pm and don’t close shop till 4 am the next day.

Shaved ice drenched in rooh-afza (Rose), orange, pineapple, raspberry, chocolate or ice cream soda (Sweet Green) flavoured syrup and topped with canned fruit, dried fruit, Ice-Creams and condensed milk Comele Milk makes up a gola ganda. In Dhoraji, it starts from 50 rs (0.3USD) to 1000 rs (8 USD), depending on the toppings like Pineapples, Chocolate, Icecreams, Pistachio, Almonds, Cashew nuts, walnuts , Coconut Powder and other toppings.

The falooda (Milk, Icecream, Noodles,Jelly and Dry Fruits) sold on the same street cost Rs160 to Rs 200, while a chilled glass of limca is sold for Rs60.

Earlier, they used to do so much manually old method of shaving the ice to make the gola ganda but now they have Electrical machines to do all that work.

Uncle Gola, Saleem Qadir Uncle Gola, Qadri Gola and Marhaba Uncle Gola (I think Uncle is trade mark there, because every Gola Seller use word “Uncle” with the shop title names) are some of the famous vendors who sell shaved ice on the street.

This List Of Gola Shops, Carts, Restaurants and Stalls of Dhoraji Food/Gola Ganda Street will Help People who want to visit this wonderful Food Street Soon.

Owner of one of the cart there said their business starts at 2 pm and continues for the next 14 hours. Further he said that his father selling Gola Ganda here around 45 years to when just two or three others vendors put up their carts here. Later, many other Carts and Stalls began to set up on the same street.

When my fellow Local Guide Salman Iqbal Asked the question about contaminated ice and water used to make the gola ganda, One of the owners said that the ice for Gola Ganda or Faluda they buy from Ice depots of Nearby areas. And they can only request them to make the ice with clean water but no one can guarantee the quality of the ice.

He said that if for example they used to make the ice at home with boiled water, then the cost of the gola ganda will increase, which only the elites can afford because it’s reaches at the cost above Rs 400 to Rs 500 (3 to 4 USD) for Normal Gola Ganda.

In the Same street we visited to a Local Burger (Bunkabab {crushed cheknuts, dried, split pulses, lentils, peas, and beans with spices and fried egg} with Bun) restaurant, there Naeemurrehman and Siqbal took some awesome shots of preparation of Gola Ganda and Bunkabab, which you can enjoy in Naeemurrehman’s Video.

I’m humbled and grateful for mentioning me @KashifMisidia . Great recap! It’s a shame that I cannot taste Gola Ganda :(. I think we need something similar in Greece as it’s very warm.
