Madurai has a special park for kids with special needs – it’s the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, which is pretty amazing. The city runs it, and it’s been open since 2017.
The idea behind the park is really important. Kids with special needs often don’t have the same opportunities to play in regular parks. Sometimes, even if other kids are welcoming, their parents might not be. This park changes that. It gives kids and families a safe space to play and connect, without any judgment or unwanted attention.
I recently visited the park (with permission, though they were a little uneasy about photos). The paths are paved, which is essential for accessibility. They have specially designed play equipment, like low swings and adapted games, plus accessible bathrooms and plenty of shaded benches. It’s open weekdays, 10 am to 5 pm.
They also run programs with parents – skill-building, fitness, and other helpful support. If groups want to visit, they need to book in advance (details are on the notice board).
While the park is a fantastic idea, it needs more support to keep it running smoothly. I’m hoping to connect with some people and organizations who might be able to help. I also wanted to share this with you all – maybe you know of similar places in your area, or maybe this will inspire you to start something new. It’s so important that these spaces exist. Maybe we could even organize a meetup to support it!
