Hello, Local Guides!
I’m @Papel_Mahammud from Dhaka, Bangladesh. I’m a member of the Bangladesh Local Guides community and a regular contributor to Google Maps.
Today, I’d like to share some experiences and memorable moments from the Wheelchair Accessibility Meetup that I hosted on October 9, 2026, at Kadamtali, Keraniganj, Dhaka.
Our meetup was scheduled from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The main objective was to identify places with wheelchair accessibility, check the facilities in person, and update the relevant information on Google Maps to help people who rely on these facilities.
A Rainy Start to Our Meetup
We arrived at the meetup location on time, but unfortunately, heavy rain started just before our meetup was about to begin. The rain continued for almost three hours, making it difficult for us to explore the surrounding areas as planned.
Despite the bad weather, a few dedicated Local Guides managed to join the meetup, which was really encouraging for me as the host.
Most of the participants were experienced Local Guides, but we also had @Jashim_uddin who was completely new to the Local Guides program. It was his first time learning about the community, so we introduced him to the program, explained how contributions work on Google Maps, and shared some of the volunteering activities we do as Local Guides.
Another special moment was meeting Local Guide @ShamsurRahman , who traveled all the way from Narayanganj to attend. This was his very first Local Guides meetup. We introduced ourselves, shared our experiences, and had some interesting conversations about Google Maps contributions.
Exploring Wheelchair Accessibility Inside a Business Center
Due to the continuous rain, we decided to stay inside a nearby multi-story business center that had wheelchair-accessible facilities.

On the ground floor, we found a diagnostic center with two accessible entrances that made it easier for wheelchair users to enter the facility.
We checked the accessibility features and updated the information on Google Maps by answering relevant questions and making contributions.

There were also several other businesses inside the same building with wheelchair-accessible facilities. We explored those places and updated their accessibility information on Google Maps as well.
Along with the accessibility updates, everyone participated in different types of contributions, including map edits, uploading photos and videos, answering questions, and writing reviews.
Of course, we also took some group photos and selfies to remember the day.
Ice Cream, Coffee, and More Google Maps Contributions
One interesting part of our meetup happened when we visited a departmental store inside the building to buy some ice cream.
While shopping, we noticed that the store was running a Buy One Get One offer. Since we were already contributing to Google Maps, we decided to share that information through the Maps update feature.
Even a simple ice cream break turned into another opportunity to contribute!
Later, we visited the office of our fellow Local Guide, on the fourth floor of the same building.
We used the elevator and noticed that it had enough space for wheelchair access. After reaching the fourth floor, we also found that office had wheelchair-accessible entry facilities.

We spent some quality time at his office, enjoying ice cream, coffee, and biscuits while discussing our experiences as Local Guides.
Everyone shared their knowledge, talked about different contribution methods, and helped each other learn something new. We also continued making contributions to Google Maps during our conversations.
It was a relaxed and enjoyable gathering, and we captured several photos together.
A Memorable Meetup Despite the Weather
Although the heavy rain prevented us from exploring all the locations we had originally planned to visit, I still consider this meetup a meaningful experience.
We managed to check and update wheelchair accessibility information for several businesses, welcome someone new to the Local Guides community, and meet a fellow Local Guide attending his first meetup.
For me, one of the most rewarding parts of being a Local Guide is knowing that even a small contribution can make a difference to someone else. Accurate accessibility information on Google Maps can be particularly helpful for wheelchair users when planning visits to unfamiliar places.
I’m genuinely thankful to everyone who joined my meetup despite the heavy rain. It was a pleasure spending time together, sharing knowledge, and contributing to Google Maps.
I hope we’ll have more opportunities to meet, explore new places, and make useful contributions together in the future.
Thank you for reading my meetup recap.
