Recap: [Hybrid] India, February 16, Celebrating 10 Years of Local Guides & 20 Years of Google Maps! ๐ŸŽ‰

The anticipation was palpable as I embarked to mark a double milestone: 10 years of Local Guides and an impressive 20 years of Google Maps! My starting point? Picking up @KetanChhaniyara, with the excitement building for the day ahead. We knew @bhayani_naitik and @NituGogoi were already at our destination, the Dandi Kutir Museum, a museum devoted to the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Entering the museum was like going back in time. We toured with a group, all of us excited to know more about Gandhiโ€™s remarkable life. Walking through the exhibits, something caught my attention.

The museum had a bike-sharing point and a baggage room, but neither showed up on Google Maps! What a Local Guidesโ€™ opportunity! There and then, I pulled out my phone and added the missing places. It was a rush to get them accepted almost at once โ€“ a tiny but gratifying bit of contribution to making the map more complete for all.

After our eye-opening trip to the museum, it was time to give some love back. I pulled everyone together and got into some cool facts about the Local Guides program and Google Maps history. We discussed how much both have progressed and the amazing community that makes them unique.

And of course, no party is complete without snacks! We wrapped up the meetup with some tasty goodies, the perfect ending to a day of history, community, and map magic. To another 10 (and 20!) years of discovery, sharing, and connection!

On February 16, 2025, we joyfully celebrated two incredible milestones: 10 years of the Local Guides program :tada: and 20 years of Google Maps! :confetti_ball: As part of these festivities, I had the pleasure of co-hosting a virtual meet-up :iphone: alongside the physical gathering at the Dandi Kutir Museum.

:classical_building: Virtual Meet-Up Highlights :movie_camera::globe_showing_asia_australia:

Our virtual session kicked off at 10:00 AM sharp and concluded at 10:30 AM, sticking to the museumโ€™s policy that prohibits photography & videography inside. :prohibited::camera_with_flash: But that didnโ€™t stop us from having an exciting and insightful session! :light_bulb:

I showcased posters of various incredible tourism places across Gujarat :world_map::sparkles:, sparking curiosity among our amazing participants. @RosyKohli ji, @K.K.Sharma ji, and @PrasadVR ji showed keen interest and asked questions about these locations which included Gir Lion Sanctuary, Somnath, Patan, Sun Temple, Girnar Hill. :national_park::face_with_monocle: Their curiosity made the session even more interactive and engaging!

:world_map::round_pushpin: A Walk Through Google Maps & Local Guides History :rocket:

After the museum tour, our dear @NareshDarji and we :handshake::studio_microphone:, shared some fascinating insights about the journey of Google Maps & Local Guides:

  • :spiral_calendar: 2005 โ€“ Google Maps was launched :world_map:, changing how we navigate the world! :globe_showing_europe_africa::sparkles:

  • :cityscape: 2013 โ€“ Google introduced the โ€œCity Expertsโ€ program :cityscape::busts_in_silhouette:, a pilot initiative in select cities like NYC to encourage high-quality reviews.

  • :globe_showing_americas: 2015 โ€“ The program expanded globally as โ€œLocal Guidesโ€ :backpack::man_walking:, inviting users worldwide to contribute to Google Maps.

  • :chart_increasing: 2016 โ€“ The program introduced a points system & new levels, making contributions more rewarding! :trophy:

It was truly inspiring :light_bulb::blue_heart: to hear how far weโ€™ve come as a community of explorers, reviewers, and mappers! :globe_showing_europe_africa::speech_balloon:

:wheelchair_symbol: Accessibility at the Dandi Kutir Museum :classical_building::wheelchair_symbol:

One thing that stood out about the Dandi Kutir Museum is its commitment to accessibility! :classical_building::white_check_mark:

:water_closet: Fully accessible restrooms
:droplet: Drinking water points are wheelchair-friendly :potable_water::wheelchair_symbol:
:railway_track: Smooth ramps for easy navigation

Itโ€™s heartwarming :heart: to see such inclusive spaces that allow everyone to enjoy history & culture comfortably! :hugs::sparkles:

:folded_hands: Huge Thanks to Everyone! :tada::blue_heart:

A big THANK YOU :raising_hands: to everyone @Ptrivedi, @Rahul1942, @K.K.Sharma, @Meenakshikgaur, @PrasadVR, @SarathUpendran, @Raj_Tayade, @ModNomad, @Gouri.PS, @Mukund_hirapara, @VijendraPatidar, @Kumaarsantosh and others who joined the virtual session and made it a wonderful & engaging experience! :microphone::speech_balloon::light_bulb:
