I have been learning a lot about street arts from around the world through Google Maps & Local Guides Connect in past two years. My love for street art keeps bringing me back to Lodhi Art District - India’s Largest Art District & truly heaven for Mural Lovers.
In this edition of our meet up we discussed a lot of new murals from the area and exchanged a lot of stories about them. Have a look at some of most interesting murals that we discussed.
This time we discussed about the Murals depicting Indian Festivals and it was such a great insights to our festivals through these walls. Its fascinating how artists pick subtle references of everything that is around them and turn them into murals.
The Mural about Famous Festival - Holi
I have read a lot of articles on local guides connect about Indian sharing there love for Holi Festival - Its a festival in the month of March and its a festival of colors. We color each other to share our love for each other and its a reminder to have more colors in our life
This Mural was painted by Indian Artist Hanif Khureshi & he did this work in month of March while people were still celebrating the festival on the streets. Have a look at how people play Holi in New Delhi through this picture
Interestingly a lot of artist play free music around this wall as a back drop to open air concerts and it gives locals a chance to experience local music and arts at one place
When this mural was painted, the colors were not just on the wall, it was also on the road! Because the artist decided to play HOLI with all the colors that he had , the locals joined hands with him and made this mural also on the road! It came out just so beautifully!
Mural About the Festival of Diwal - The festival of lights
The mural reflects lights, glitter, sparkle and is a dedication to the festival of lights Diwali which is celebrated in India as homecoming of one of our famous Gods , lord Rama and it is celebrated to mark the victory of the good over evil.
Mural about Dances of South India
There is another Mural in the area dedicated to the colorful dance of South India - Kathakali - its a dance form that is to be performed with huge mask on the face and artists are allowed only to do movement of the eyes and no other dialogues are spoken.
In the mural you can see a lot of elements of modern technology also - PACMAN and vinyl and an entire stereo system this was meant to be an integration of old and new infused together into a mural. It took the artist nearly 40 days to complete the whole work and it looks absolutely priceless!
I also shared my experience of actually meeting these artists and visiting them back stage for the performance! Since the countries outside India were going under lockdown, we took this opportunity to travel locally & explore these wonderful options of cultural explorations.
Thankyou everyone who joined in the meetup and sharing for their love of murals and listening to mine. I enjoy sharing my passion for street art always on Local Guides Connect!
