RECAP: Chapel Street in March (16 Mar 2019)

We could not have asked for a more beautiful day to do our photowalk down Chapel Street this March day.

This weekend, as it so happened, also coincided with the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix which brought its added benefit because one Local Guide from Laos found a free morning to join our photowalk. And so that brought our number up to 11.

Chapel Street traces its history to the mid 1800s. A time when horses and carriages can be seen up and down the street. “Joseph Crook is believed to have built the first house in Chapel Street in 1849, when the street was known as Fitzroy Road. Chapel Street was named after the first church in Prahran, an Independent (or Congregational) Church … between 1850 and 1852” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapel_Street,_Melbourne).. )

Today you can see the interplay of the old and new jostling for space and significance and existing side by side.

And did you know that Lindsay Fox went to Melbourne High Boys School? He is the founder of Linfox – Australia’s largest privately held logistics company. (Thanks to Terry we found out lots of juicy snippets of some of the places we saw along route.)

On this Saturday, proud and patient pooches were out in numbers with their people.

Curious pigeons, plump pumpkins and long strings of garlic were also sighted.

P is for parking and Passion Pop.

P is also for prancing performer at the Prahran Market.

And dare I state the obvious? P is also for photographer!

And when you think I can’t find any more P words, how about parapets and chimney Pots?

Don’t just stick to the main street, for out in the back lanes and alley ways, you can also find the work of passionate street-artists.

Sometimes you have to go higher than street level to see these. This multi storey piece is almost an ‘iconic’ piece for Chapel Street. I’d often seen it driving along the street but this was the first time I’d seen it up close.

Whether looking down or looking up, or just walking along, there’s always something to see, taste and experience.

So next time you come for a visit, whether you drive, bus, tram, train, bike or walk, I’m sure you’ll have a fine time. Because when you are among Local Guides, you are among friends!

Oh absolutely @MariaNgo I don’t think I’ve ever been on a photowalk that goes completely to plan, it is a pity that restaurant denied the split billing. Life is like that. Its about how you bounce back and yes we had a great day with both new and old friends which is excellent.

Wow lots of photos! Glad you guys had good weather and good fun!

@JulienH Yes, we certainly had fantastic weather and a barrel ful (or more) of fun.

Yeah, I got carried away with the photos … I don’t think I quite followed the rules of a 36 photo walk (!). I did take a lot less than I used to. LOL.

Thanks for letting me know @MariaNgo !

I really enjoyed all those photos, it seems you all had a blast. Architecture, animals and street art, what more do you need?

This is exactly how the album would have looked if I were to put it together - full of dogs.

I’m impressed you got so much done in a single day, and I will look through those photos a couple more times just for the fun of it.

Thanks you again!

@MortenSI I’m glad you enjoyed the photos and will continue to enjoy them. :grinning::grinning::grinning:

I have since found out that we have a 1000 photos in total of all our posts limit. I’ll have to begin to limit myself in the photos I post in future. Bummer! I wonder what it would take to convince people at Google to increase that limit.

@MariaNgo - never been to Melbourne, but I felt like I did through your photos. I like all those old buildings.

Nice to see @KhamphoutS was able to join too. Nice to see a mini Connect Live 2018 reunion with @PaulPavlinovich within this year’s annual Worldwide 36 Photowalk.

Looks like you covered it all: architecture, dogs (are dogs allowed in restaurants?), street art, food as in eating and at markets, and fast vehicles - cars and motorcycles. How long was your walk?

Cheers,

Karen

Yes the photo limit is something we’ll have to have in mind when posting @MariaNgo . The best way to avoid reaching your limit is to only select your favorite photos for the post and leave the rest to be viewed in the album.

The team is already aware of the desire to increase the photo upload, and you can show your support by voting for the for the idea right here.

Licensed service dogs (deaf, blind, ptsd, etc.) are allowed in restaurants. No other animals are allowed @KarenVChin

@KarenVChin I’m glad that my photos gave you a good sense of what it is like in Chapel Street Melbourne. I hope one day I’ll be able to show you Melbourne!

@KarenVChin PS

Yes we certainly covered it all.

We met at 10.15 am and David and I waved goodbye to Paul, Frank and Terry at about 5.30 pm to head to the train station. I’m not sure what time the last 3 went their separate ways after the Railway Hotel after a pint (or more?).
