[Recap] ASIA ONE SUMMIT, New Delhi, India

Local Guides Asia1 Summit: Let's Unite AsiaNew Delhi, India :india:

(June 29 & June 30, 2019)

  • Introduction:-

The Google Local Guides program have created a plethora of opportunities worldwide. It has supported the concept of communities from its inception. The unofficial Local Guides communities few years ago paved the

way of bringing Local Guides contributors from a particular geographical region close to each other. Communities grew upon the cities, the districts, the states and even on a nationwide scale!

The India Local Guides community in the year 2019 considered to break all barriers and throw this bond on a challenging yet larger scope - when they planned to unite the whole continent of Asia through a Google Local Guides intercontinental meetup, and hence the idea of Asia1 Summit: Let’s Unite Asia was born. Asia undoubtedly has the largest quantity of active Local Guides contributors, and a heavy percentage of content of Google Maps are uploaded on daily basis by the Asian community.

As already mentioned, Asia One was a dream project, and one must know the brains behind such an ambitious concept before going through the outcome.

  • Brains behind Asia ONE:-

The Google Local Guides program is wonderfully popular across the nation of India, just like its neighboring and nearby Asian nations such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Pakistan or Malaysia. India have numerous Local Guides communities which are active and who regularly host meetups as well as events in the locations through north to the south, across west to the east of the nation. The inspiration behind Asia One in larger portion was the mammoth Google Local Guides Connect Live (earlier, Local Guides Summit) that is hosted annually in presence of selected top 150-200 Local Guides from all over the world at the Google HQ, San Fransisco, the United States of America.

The idea of organizing a similar large scale summit by the Local Guides, for the Local Guides, struck @deepakjhic (Deepak Kumar), the creator of India Local Guides community. Deepak is a long-time Local Guides contributor who hails from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) and works as a software engineer at Sonipat, Haryana. All set to represent India at the Connect Live 2019, Deepak was influenced by @ShafiulB (Shafiul Bashar), a top local guide contributor from the neighboring nation Bangladesh in planning to organize this event.

If Deepak was the heart behind such a brilliant initiative of bringing a whole continent together at a same place, @AmbrishVarshney (Ambrish Varshney) was the brain behind the notion of it. Leader of one of the most active and happening Local Guides communities in India, the Delhi Local Guides Chapter, Ambrish made the dream come true with his excellent organization skills. From planning to team building to public handling to financial executions - Ambrish and Deepak in team were the pillars behind the successful hosting of Asia One Summit.

  • Venue:-

Venue is a crucial factor on the path of success of an event, as a pleasant location can set the mood for the people implicitly itself! The Local Guides Asia One Summit got camped last Saturday at the Imperfecto RuinPub, Logix Mall Noida, Delhi N.C.R. (National Capital Region) without which the true essence of this event could not have been retrieved among with attendees from all over the nation.

  • Attendees:-

Here we come to the most awaited statistic regarding Asia One. This dream intercontinental Local Guides meetup received a wonderful response, as the official count of attendees stood at 85! Local Guides attended this event hosted around the Delhi N.C.R. coming from all corners of the country of India. While Ishant Gautam represented Himachal Pradesh, Baljinder Singh traveled from Chandigarh, Virendra Nautiyal came from Uttarakhand along with Shiv Pandey. Rahul Kumar from Rajasthan traveled 230 kilometers on bus one way just like any other Local Guides meetup he attends at Delhi, Ashique Mirza from Bengal made a stop at the event in the mid of his solo India trip. Salmaan Nawaz, the Connect Live 2018 attendee from Bangalore came all the way for the summit. Bunny Ayush, one of the favorite photography experts in the team represented Madhya Pradesh. Shruti, Sumeet, Shreeya and team represented Mumbai, Maharashtra while Sophie attended all the way from Nagaland. Vicky Krish was present there from Tamil Nadu. Local Guides from Punjab, Gujarat, Kerala, Haryana, Bihar got united at Asia One Summit and came to know each other!

  • Support from outside India:-

Although there were no representation of any other nation apart from the hosts physically at the inaugural version of the Asia One Summit this time due to various reasons, mainly visa issues, Local Guides from the other Asian nations were always ready to help, guide and support the initiative.

The first mention goes to Connect Moderator @StephenAbraham from Malaysia, who has an Indian connection too, for his unconditional support to Asia1. We thank @MahabubMunna from Bangladesh for his expert guidance and sharing his experiences as the leader of Bangladesh Local Guides community. Thanks to Shafiul Bashar as one of the initiators of this initiative, also thanks to @ShahMdSultan for being with us throughout despite he could not attend due to visa related problem. We appreciate @KashifMisidia from Pakistan for being virtually present at the summit through video conference. We thank @AnuradhaP from Sri Lanka for showing interest to visit India for this event.

Last, but not the least, it was the Googlers team led by @TraciC who sent a very special video message that boosted our confidence ahead of the large challenge easily! Thank you so much for this video:

As the host nation of the first edition of Asia One Summit, we hope there would be participation of Local Guides from the Asian nations in large numbers, at whichever country that will host the next edition.

  • Events on Day 1:-

1. Registration and Entry of Attendees at the Venue → On sharp 10:30 a.m., the gates of the venue crashed open, triggering the entrance of Local Guides inside. Here are some images from the entrance:

2. Welcome Speech & Break the Ice Episode → Soon, the proceedings of the day began as per schedule, but before we moved on, Local Guide @Explore_Keshav (Keshav Agarwal) initiated breaking of ice among the attendees with his brilliant anchoring.

3. Speech by Clownselor Sheetal Aggarwal → Medical clown Sheetal introduced the attendees with the concept of medical clowning and inspired the attendees to smile more in everyday life.

4. Video Messages by Local Guides for Asia One Summit → A number of wishes recorded by the Google Local Guides for the Asia One Summit were projected on the large screen before moving on to the next speech.

5. Speech on the New Features on Google Maps & Google Local Guides → I was invited to speak about the latest features incorporated in both Google Maps and Google Local Guides program over the last one year.

6. Cake Cutting ceremony to celebrate Asia One Summit → It was time to begin the celebration after series of speeches, and the specially designed Asia One themed cake (logo designed by Praveen D’Souza) was delivered by Nandita Creations, along with numerous cutely designed creamy cupcakes of two flavors. Attendees from all over the nation ambushed it from all sides with sharp knives to cut it open!

7. Lunch → Any event is incomplete without food, and when the intensity was skyrocketing at the Asia One Summit, variety of food items came in like shower. In the snacks section, you could find your choices easily irrespective of preference of being vegetarian or non-vegetarian, as Chilly Potato, Spring Roll, Macaroni, Chicken Wings and boneless Chicken Kabab were sacrificed to boost the energy of the audience after a long first half of the whole-day event.

This followed with the grand buffet lunch session incorporating various foods such as Dal Makhani, Shahi Paneer, Rice, Tandoori Roti, Butter Chicken, Kheer and sweetmeat. Last but not the least, there were sweets for every attendee sponsored by Singhal Sweets!

10. Speech by Food Blogger Sukrit Jain → Food blogger and influencer Sukrit Jain spoke about the art of blogging and his passion about food along with his brother and co-blogger Kashish Jain.

11. Fun Interactive Session with Local Guides → Everyone was done with lots of speeches, so it was time to boost the energy, so the fun session began with Alphee and Ambrish as the joint hosts.

12. Movement & Impromptu Music Session → Another bonding session followed where local guides formed a circle to exercise movement to the tunes of music and to the rhythm of dance together. The impromptu music sessions were a team activity where teams put all effort to beat their counterparts, all in a fun mood.

13. Group Photo Session → Before we move forward to the ending event of the day, it was time to settle down together for the group photo session.

14. Drum Circle → Led by Debu Mishra, a drumming team sat in a circle facing the Local Guides and hypnotized them soon to bring them into the dance floor!

With this, the party for Day 1 at Asia One Summit came to a closure. The day was long, but full of fun thanks to the endless enthusiasm and involvement displayed by the attendees in high numbers. It was time for the Local Guides to get a sleep and get ready for the next morning for the Delhi Darshan activity together.

  • HOHO Bus on Day 2:-

The next day, i.e., on Sunday, 30 June, the Asia One attendees were scheduled to visit the tourist spots spread across the historical city of Delhi through HOHO (Hop On Hop Off) bus service, a service by the Delhi Government where the travelers can move through a total of 21 tourist destinations across the city on air conditioned Volvo bus service. The concept of HOHO allows a passenger to hop off on a particular tourist spot while the bus moves to the next destination on list, so that the tourist can view the spot and board the next bus that arrives exactly 40 minutes later on spot to move to the next destination. Hence, one can sit through multiple buses on same ticket, and hop off at their favorite spots, as well as has the option of not hopping off to a location when one does not intend to visit.

As the Asia One attendees arrived at the HOHO Center at Connaught Place, in Delhi around 8 a.m. in the morning, we boarded the bus scheduled to move on 8:15 a.m. It went through some of the very famous places in the neighborhood such as - Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Rajiv Chowk inner circle, Times of India building, Chandni Chowk before taking its first stop at the Red Fort (Lal Quila).

The next HOHO bus took the Local Guides through Khooni Darwaza, Delhi Gate, Feroz Shah Kotla Fort & International Cricket Stadium, I.T.O., Supreme Court of India, Patiala House, National Art Museum to the next stop at India Gate.

The HOHO bus next moved through the VVIP zone of the Indian political capital - South Block, North Block, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Finance, Rashtrapati Bhawan, Parliament, Vijay Chowk, Police Stambh towards the next stop at National Museum.

Local Guides thereafter boarded the HOHO again, this time moving through the consulate area at Chanakyapuri, National Rail Museum, Dilli Haat, Sarojini Nagar Market to the next stop at Qutub Minar, Mehrauli.

The Local Guides were tired after two days of fun and frolic altogether, so the next stop at Lotus Temple was decided to be the end point of Asia One Delhi Darshan activity. On way, they saw places such as Chittaranjan Park, Nehru Place from the bus itself.

Local Guides had great fun on day 2 just like day 1, and it was really saddening to see them depart after two days of togetherness. Delhi will miss all of you, Local Guides! Come, visit again.

  • Team behind Asia ONE:-

Without a great team, good results cannot be achieved. Behind the successful completion of Asia One Summit was a team handpicked by the chief organizers Deepak and Ambrish themselves.

Handling the sponsors, planning the flow, maintaining co-ordination between internal teams, managing the venue crew, and rocking the stage - Naman Jain ( @hiiamnamanjain ) was one of the reasons why Asia One went so successful. Every attractive front end needs a neat back end, Naman acted like that back end here at this event.

Meet Alphee Chauhan ( @Alphee ), a teacher and an artist with a great personality who can bond with anyone of any age. From the seniormost LG to the youngest attendee - Alphee easily made friends and rocked with the mic in her hand. It is rare to find a lady like her, she never gets angry and she knows how to get the job done. Alphee ma’am was definitely one of the pillars behind Asia One Summit.

Keshav Agarwal ( @Explore_Keshav ) was electric with the mic as the anchor at Asia One Day 1. The smooth handling of event sequence, situations, co-ordinations and killing even a small amount of boredom among the audience - Keshav did it all with his charisma.

There could not have been a better guy to handle anchoring than veteran stage performer, theater artist, assistant director and actor of many films, serials, documentaries and advertisements - Praveen Bhajanka ( @Pbhajanka ). In co-ordination with Keshav and Cheena, he was the boy-next-door with the mic in front of such a huge audience.

@Praviarva (Praveen D’Souza), a long time member of the Delhi Local Guides community, was the graphic designer of Asia One. Apart from that, most of the nicest shots at the event was clicked by himself on his DSLR.

Cheena Singhal ( @Cheena ), the lady with the mic was fluent in her way of delivering her pieces of anchoring frequently throughout the first day of Asia One. She also excelled in managing the fun Q&A round with some great questions for the attendees.

It was a great opportunity for me to be part of such a large event like Asia One, mainly as the content creator and social media handler of this event. I was also given an additional responsibility of delivering a speech on the latest features on Google Maps and Google Local Guides applications, and this required good amount of research to prepare the speech to be delivered in front of such an enormous audience who are also Local Guides contributors just like me. I must thank Ambrish for putting trust on me and giving this opportunity to beat my fear and deliver a speech in front of the Asia One attendees.

I must mention the names of Prakash Panchal ( @JMD9 ), Tushar Verma, TravellerG ( @TravellerG ) who were involved in the process of Asia One in some way or the other. Thank you everyone!

  • Acknowledgement:-

Without whom, Asia One could not have been possible in the way it was hosted, we must thank them individually →

  1. Asia One Attendees - The support we got nationwide, the way people traveled and covered long distances, planned accommodation and travelled with fellow Local Guides together during the event duration was just awesome. Without the presence of Local Guides, a Local Guides Meetup would not have been possible literally.

  2. Imperfecto Ruin Pub, Noida - Venue Partner.

  3. Singhal Sweets - Dessert Partner

  4. Nandita Creations - Cake Partner

  5. Balaji Enterprises - Printing Partner

  6. Team Asia One

  • Message for Asian nations:-

India have initiated the initiative of Asia One with a bang, although we missed the participation of Local Guides from the nations apart from India in this first edition. As we have already clarified that we would like to see the next edition of Asia One to be hosted by another Asian nation where we would travel to attend and represent our nation, we would like see this happen soon. Rest is all up to you, our good wishes will always be with the Asian nations, because the unity of Asian Local Guides is the ultimate aim behind hosting such a multinational Local Guides meetup.

@ReshamDas Thanks for tagging me here! I am very happy to see this big and successful event. My bad luck I couldn’t join there for my family problem.

Asia One - the idea shared with India Local Guides ( @deepakjhic ) was a bit one but you all showed it like the Himalaya.

I am so thankful to you all who organized and did hard work for this big event.

Looking forward to seeing the next Year ASIA ONE event.
