Hello there, dear local guides!
I wish you all are safe and secure in this current situation.
This is a summary of my very First Meet-up, which I organised on August 29th, 2021 in Vadodara, my hometown, under the banner**“Accessible Vadodara” **
and with the aid and consistent support of @NareshDarji sir and @Tejal mam. I appreciate all they’ve done for me.
The meet-up was organized with the primary aim of examining several accessibility features such as wheelchair accessible entrance, accessible toilet, wide moving area of a wheelchair, etc, update them on the map, and verify the accessibility condition of certain sites surrounding Sayaji Baug. Meet-up was held with all necessary precautions. One can see in the below image all is wearing a mask.
To make the meet-up more pleasant and memorable, as well as a positive step toward making the Vadodara Local Guide Community stronger and more aware of Google Maps, I distributed some gifts of my own, such as
badges and stickers, which is permitted to do under the local guides connect policy. As seen in the image.
I arrived early at the meet-up place, and then @ashishdesai24 , @Shruti_U , and @NIKHIL54 joined me, and we began investigating accessibility features. @Shruti_U is from Uttarakhand and just relocated to Vadodara for a job assignment and joined meet-up with full enthusiasm. I am grateful to everyone who donated their time and attended my meet-up. I also arranged a virtual session side-by-side for people who couldn’t attend in person.
Shri Rajendra Shah sir, an ex-tourist official of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, joined us virtually on my special request and provided some background information about Sayaji Baug. Please watch the video mentioned below; you will be amazed to learn many fascinating facts and history.
I’m going to tell some astonishing facts regarding Sayaji Baug at a glance. I strongly advise you to watch the video above to learn more.
- Sayaji Baug, also known as “Kamati Baug,” is one such site located on the banks of the Vishwamitri river in the heart of Vadodara. It was commissioned by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad the 3rd.
- Take at least half a day to thoroughly explore the 45 hectares of garden grounds, which include two museums, a zoo, a planetarium, a floral clock, and an operating toy train, among other things, and then return to the park anytime you need a break from the rest of the city’s activities.
- With 113 acres, this is the largest public garden in the western region of the country (45 hectares).
- There is a Museum and Picture Gallery constructed by the British Architect, Robert Chisholm, which maintains a very rich collection of art, sculpture, as well as the four feet tall Egyptian Mummy and the skeleton of a Blue Whale, which are some of its most renowned exhibits.
- There’s also an open-air theatre and a massive flower clock (Sun Clock). The clock’s mechanism is underneath, and its hour, minute, and second hands move on a 20-foot-diameter dial.
- This is a fascinating site for nature enthusiasts, with over 96 tree species and a small zoo. The zoo has 167 different types of 1103 different animals of varying sizes and forms. (numbers are approximate)
I visited all these attractions during my meet-up and one can find the pictures in the Meet-up pictures link - https://photos.app.goo.gl/bZmr5pU1nuTS2CWK6.
Let us examine accessibility features - marked with are good and
marked are needs to be improved.
All in all, Sayaji Baug and other attractions inside it are mostly accessible for all. Some things need to be improved. It was a great pleasure to meet Vadodara Local Guides and we will make Vadodara more accessible for everybody.
Thank you for reading the post.
Stay safe and happy.
Have a great day!
