A Trip to Yaba Art Museum had been a meet-up I had been eager to organise and share with other local guides ever since I found out about the museum in the news. I found it intriguing because it has such potential to offer an insight into our cultural history through appreciating art in its various formats.
Visiting the museum (and invariably Yabatech) was for some of us the very first time we would be entering the grounds within which the museum is located, thus, even making the visit all the more interesting, as there were other locations that provided ample opportunities for map editing.
Local Guides were treated to art history from the perspective of Mrs. Nike Okundaye (one of Nigeria’s foremost artist and collector), as the guided tour of the exhibition took us through her life. The exhibition, largely based on her works/collection, is a research expose on arts in its different mediums and its history in Nigeria.
As part of the tour and probably the most fun part of the day, the women were treated to playing “dress-up”, wearing the attires and headgears worn and popularised by Mrs. Nike Okundaye. Who knew Local Guides had modelling superpowers. This moment was the crowning point of the visit to Yaba Art Museum for the “Living Blue, An Archive Retrospective” tour.
Thank you @Sayo for organizing a successful superb meet-up. I dreamt of this all week long before domestic accident the night before. I know I missed a great one. Lovely seeing @Jblack in the attires. Happy faces in the album. On to the next one bro.
Thank you @Sayo for this thrilling meet-up. Good to see women among Lagos Local Guides being treated to playing “dress-up”, and wearing the attires as well as headgears worn - popularised by Mrs. Nike Okundaye.
I feel happy to see Chief Nike being celebrated by other artists and galleries. She deserves the recognition for setting the pace. Nice to see @Hannah_Ishola and the rest of LOcal Guides in those adire.
This was nothing but a lovely fun-filled meetup. I’m so glad to see everyone all happy and cheerful. I especially love the traditional attire and the ladies sure did justice to the outfits.
Thanks for sharing the experience here. Even though I was unavoidably absent, I am able to relive the experience from here.
