In the past it was almost impossible for the common man to enter the King’s palace. And in this era, with the efforts of the State Archaeological Department and Tourism Corporation in these special palaces, tourists can live in the imagination of the past glory and passion because the entry is given.
Most of the palaces and buildings located in the Orchha Fort are multi-storeyed and Raja Mahal is also one of the magnificent and strong buildings of four to five storeys with sufficient staircases to access the upper floors.
The palace is multi-storeyed, and has a grandeur not found in other royal palaces in the same location. The exterior of the palace reflects the richness and sovereignty apart from the regional culture and architecture.
Raja Mahal’s first part was built in a perfect square shape around the square courtyard now it’s inner courtyard by Raja Bhartichand whose reign was from 1531 to 1554 A.D. as his residence. Rooms around the inner courtyard served as the private residence of the king, his wives and children. It features its Bundela architectural style a blend of Mughal and Rajputana architecture, vaulted ceilings, paintings, archways, lattices, terraces, courtyard was the venue for various colorful events. First and Second Floors Some of the rooms upstairs also have lovely paintings on the ceilings and exquisite jali work in the openings. The South Wing features the toilets, bathrooms and washing areas connected to a five- hundred-year-old drainage system which is still functional.
The interior is rich in beauty, with stone flooring, plaster work in keeping with the courtly culture which was common in those times, like main entrance gateway inner multi storeyed gateways with hanging balconies either sides, basements, colonnaded hall with multifoil archways and fountain, which is located on the ground floor of the Palace adjacent to the first courtyard which is the part of Deewan e Khas are the most attractive features.
This is a magnificent monument and glorious heritage which reflects the prosperity and patronage towards the art and architecture of Orchha’s rulers.
