Rabbit Island of Cambodia

Last week was Chinese new year and it means that many people travel outside of town.

Yes, I was asked to arrange a trip for a group of staff. It was a nice trip. We had a pleasant 1N2Ds trip. What is more, the five girls who I lead have never in their life seen beaches or sea before!

កោះទន្សាយ read as Koh Tonsai, Rabbit Island in English is rather a small island which located very closed to Kep city. The name perhaps given base on the shape of the island when viewing from the sky or perhaps it had many rabbits there before!

I love this island for its shallow and clear water which is easy to swim, the water is comparable to that of Koh Rong Sanleum beach but with black sand. It has short and narrow beaches compared to Koh Rong Sanleum.

The island

  • It is about 2square km and about 5kms from Kep city. You can go by boat for about 25mns.
  • Many locals prefer day trips but there are quite many guesthouses that you can spend overnight too. It has camping site as well.
  • You will take a boat from the pier, which cost about 25$/boat for max of 10pax.

What you do or see there?

  • There are quite nice white sand beaches with shallow and clear water very good for a beginner swimmer
  • You can also do snorkeling and scuba diving around this island.
  • You can hire a boat go fishing around the island as well!
  • You can look back to Kep city. It is within eyes distance.
  • At night, you can bring your own camping gears, but pay 5$ for the camping fee and bathing.
  • You can do party with your own amplifiers - locals love doing it.
  • There are few bungalows, costs around 10-30$/nights, few restaurants also available here. The price can surge during public holidays.
  • Electricity got off at around 10pm, you might be asked to pay extra for the electricity all night.
  • It’s a 3 hour walk to go around the island. You’ll be on beaches, mangrove forests and rocks.
  • It is mostly crowded over weekends and public holidays. You may wait at the pier for up to 1 hour.
  • Many businesses are owned by locals so it is still underdeveloped. You might see rubbish a lot.
  • You might want to pack your own food there but seafood at the island are fresh since they bought it from the fishermen.

You can view here for more information about the island.

Accommodation: few bungalows with camping sites can be found below. Please not that price can surge during the public holidays.

Chhay Soheng $5 - $15 with camping ground
Kem Leng $5 - $15 with camping ground
Kim Vouchiay $8 - $14
Ngann Sokha $7 - $10 Middle locations, quite clean - suggested to use this one
Yey Meng $5 - $15
Yea Om $5 - $8

@MukulR have you ever shared about sea or island on Connect? I cannot recall it at all.

Beautifully written, Sophia. I like how you take your time to explain these things, you are a great tour Guide.

Now, I want to know something.

  1. If I want tonmake a table such as yours here on Connect, how can I do that?

  2. Did you camp here?

Your photos are stunning as usual. There is something really magical about Sunrise and sunset I can’t get over and the photo of you shot on the hammock is*dripping hot @Sophia_Cambodia *

Thank you dear @Ewaade_3A for taking the time to post beautiful comments :slightly_smiling_face: appreciated that.

  1. It is possible to make a table here, I did not do it directly. Sometimes, I copied from my excel file where I have all my data there. Once I paste it here, the table show and when you click on it, it gives you options to add more row, column or delete those tables.
  2. It is so funny, I don’t recommend camping at the beach as you cannot really predict the weather. I did a camping one and it rained, so I didn’t like it. More than that, the sand that stick with your legs would disturb you at night. So, I booked for a bungalow. Here again, in dry season and it rained twice so campers had to move their sleeping camp to another place for shelter. I think they didn’t sleep well that night!

Thanks for the tip @Sophia_Cambodia

Oh, I see. You are a dedicated Traveller then.

While you did not camp at the beach you made out time to capture both sunrise and sunset, that’s amazing.

Of course dear @Ewaade_3A you know how to make a person happy

One thing, I am an early bird! So, taking sunrise photos are not hard for me.

We stayed very closed to the beach (our bungalow) so it was so easy to take photos.

Well, I never say no to travel, good thing I was paid to travel so I am just fortunate to come here.

I love to sell, I really do, I love to travel as well especially when I get to share it with others as well.

You are the Queen of the 'Chop Life Geng’. @Sophia_Cambodia

Maybe, I am always ready to make someone happy because there is someone available to receive the daily dose

Thank you very much dear @NareshDarji I am very happy you love the place. I think it is very good to bring the family and young kids since it is very convenient to swim in there. That’s what I love most in this small island.

For those who want to save, choose this as well because Koh Rong Sanleoum or Koh Rong would be double price of this one.

Hi @Sophia_Cambodia ,

this island looks like a little (in all terms hehe) paradise. You organized a very nice trip for your friends, the pictures are fantastic and I’m sure you had very good time too. Very funny to read about what you can do on this small islands, I can imagine the very local and cozy atmosphere  .

Thank you for sharing this experience with us.

Hi @LuigiZ how are you doing? I miss Connect and all kind people here including yourself, but have been busy with my new job so I don’t come here often like I used to.

Yes, it is pretty nice here and I already planned for my parents and little niece to come and enjoy beach time here. I love when it is shallow and no big waves so you can just swim as much as you want.

Hi @Sophia_Cambodia ,

all is good here thank you very much, I hope with you too and with the new job as well  . No worries about that, community is always here!

Very nice you can bring them too, and yes very nice too about the calm sea side, I’m imagining right now that relaxing atmosphere and wishing to be somewhere like that … but I’m at my desk in my office :joy: .

Hello @Sophia_Cambodia Thanks for tagging me to this post. While I was a student at the University of Chittagong I visited the sea beach area frequently almost every weekend. After completing my student life, I saw the sea last in 2011 when I went to our southmost island St. Martin. For this reason, I did not share anything here related to the sea. If I get the chance to visit our coastal area I must write my experience here and will let you know. Your post is very informative and the photo you added is really amazing. I love it very much. Thanks a lot for sharing this nice post.

I see @LuigiZ @, now it is 3rd community spread and more severe than before. I already planned for another beach/island but it looks like it is going to be postponed because of this 3rd wave. The office already suggested staff to work from home for two weeks… field trips to sites, the river islands already being postponed too…kinda got stuck at one place now :joy:
