[Proposal] For a Better Future of Google Maps: Our Minimal Commitment to Quality

Google Maps is a valuable information commons that we build together. Recently, however, certain contribution patterns have increasingly degraded the quality of information and caused inconvenience to other users. To foster a more meaningful community, here are several types of contributions we should strive to avoid.

1. Actions that Disrupt the Context of Information

  • Indiscriminate Bulk Dumping: Uploading an entire trip’s worth of photos (transportation, random streets, etc.) to a specific place (POI) where they do not belong.

  • Incorrect Location Matching: Ignoring the classification system, such as uploading restaurant menus to a public park’s profile.

  • Neglecting Outdated Information: Posting old menus or festival information from years ago as if they were current, without any clarifying context.

2. Photography that Diminishes Informational Value

  • Person-Centric Photos Over Place: While capturing the atmosphere is encouraged, photos where people (selfies/group shots) significantly obstruct the view of the facility or menu make the information less useful.

  • Leftover “Remnants” After a Meal: Posting photos of empty, messy plates or dirty tables instead of the food itself, which can create a negative visual image of the venue.

  • Substandard Photo Quality: Posting completely out-of-focus, indistinguishable dark photos, or meaningless shots with heavy glass reflections from moving vehicles.

3. Contributions that Undermine Community Trust

  • Reward-Driven Spamming: Dumping meaningless data or duplicate photos solely to gain points or level up, regardless of content quality.

  • Unfounded Defamation or Promotion: Damaging small businesses and users alike through emotional “rating terror” or using the platform for blatant self-promotion/external links.

  • Low-Effort Reviews: Leaving “Good,” “Like it,” or other one-word reviews that provide zero insight into the characteristics of the place.

To all Local Guides and general users: every photo we upload and every line we write becomes vital information for someone and a source of hope for business owners.

For our mutual benefit and a healthier Google Maps ecosystem, let us show a spirit of consideration for one another!
