Promoting Sustainable Practices in Post Merging

To Whom it May Concern

Hello!

I would like to raise a concern regarding the practice of merging posts related to meetups into a single recap.

While merging similar posts is generally a good practice, blindly merging posts that highlight valuable content is not sustainable for the community. Important contributions lose visibility, which can discourage participation over time. This is especially critical when a post has already been flagged—extra care should be taken before merging or deleting.

I strongly suggest asking for clarification before merging or deleting a flagged post. This ensures that no action is taken unintentionally. If manpower is limited, many Local Guides are willing to assist voluntarily, provided they are updated on community rules. This can be a sustainable way to manage moderation while keeping the community engaged.

Transparent guidelines should be established for merging.Posts should be assessed for quality, relevance, and long-term value before any action.

Currently, posts with minimal significance are tolerated, while meetup recaps lose visibility. Meetup posts are as valuable as other contributions, and merging them may dilute their uniqueness. Ensuring fair visibility and recognition for these posts is essential for a healthy, sustainable Local Guides community.

I request Googlers and moderators to adopt a more balanced and sustainable approach that supports both quality and participation.

Thank you.

Hi,

One of my posts, which I spent two days preparing, was about sustainable practices—specifically, eating food on banana leaves instead of using plates. Unfortunately, it was merged because someone flagged it, and later it was categorized under a meet-up recap. I feel deeply disheartened by this step.

From my perspective, this practice is indeed a sustainable community initiative, and merging it in this manner overlooks its core message. I have decided to start a healthy discussion to reach a constructive conclusion and also to understand what others think about it.

Yes, you are absolutely right, dear @SharmaK Ji…
Virgin as sustainability post just because it has some photos of a metre is illogical…
The content is very important…
Hope there will be a proper solution…
This is highly demotivating.
Please…

Hello @SharmaK,

Thank you for your detailed feedback. Please be advised that we will take it into consideration! Do not be discouraged from posting your content. We are happy to read about all your experiences as Local Guides.

Thank you for raising this @SharmaK

I would also like to share a personal concern related to this. When everyone here shares posts about where they went, how they helped a business get added to Maps, or when they post a place where price details are automatically shown does that mean every post is a promotion? Of course not, because the intention is contribution, not advertisement.

Recently, I shared a post where I mentioned helping a well-known artist to get his business listed on Google Maps. I only added a photo to show the contribution I made. I never wrote go there or use this service. Still, my photo was removed with the explanation that it was a promotional post.

This is very disheartening. Most of our posts hardly get 10 likes, and often from people 1000+ km away, so how is that considered promotion? I mean…… Well my intention was only to share my contribution with the community, nothing else. Our excitement and emotions come from showing what we have done to support others on Maps.

I believe moderators should also consider that mistakes can happen while reviewing. The responsibility for what I write is mine, not based on assumptions. Please ensure that genuine contributions are not misunderstood as promotions. Thank You!

I’m sorry but it was important to mention.nd this is is purely a feedback only not a complaint, my only intention is to help improve community guidelines and understanding for the betterment of all Local Guides.

I agree with your point @SharmaK ji
Content with unique and insightful posts often get merged citing guidelines, while actually not considering the meaning behind the post. I certainly hope our respected Googlers consider this as a positive feedback and make some changes.
Thank you for this post

That’s really bad, @SharmaK ji.

I know it was about sustainability and not a recap. I am with you on that to improve more transparency and regularise it properly.
Merging the posts in a recap is also not a good practice at all. Instead, create a seperate topic like “Meet-up experience” or “meet-up overview” for example, and encourage everyone to express their experience of it.

Cheers!

So sad @SharmaK ji it’s very different post not a recap.you mentioned about sustainability then how it is merged

Hi @SharmaK

I changed the category and tag to reflect your topic.

I recall that the Google Moderators let the Connect Moderators know that different recaps from the same event should be merged. But maybe the decision will be changed as hinted by @MoniDi above.

Alternatively, the “owner” of the official recap could create an index of participants’ recaps in the opening post. It is possible to insert links to individual replies.

That said, I have not merged any recaps.

Thank you, @MortenCopenhagen, for taking the time to comment on my post. I truly appreciate it.

To keep my response organized, I am sharing my views under two heads:

  1. Related to the tag
  2. Related to the issue raised in the post

About the Tag

At present, there is no dedicated category/tag for posts of this type. So, whenever I share such posts, I choose the category and tag that seems closest. The category and tag you changed also fit well, and I would like to clarify that my opinion is only for healthy debate—not to reverse your decision. Being a senior on Connect, you definitely have a deeper understanding.

In a meetup I hosted—:label: Official Recap: [Virtual] India, July 20 – Exploring Connect Tags: Best Practices & Issues—we discussed that posts under Google Maps contribution stories or Google Maps tips and tricks should directly relate to Google Maps. That’s why I rarely select those tags unless Google Maps is explicitly central to my content.

For the current post, I initially struggled to find a suitable tag. Eventually, I revised the content with sustainability in mind (aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals), and selected Connections and Celebrations as the category, and Sustainability as the tag.

However, if you feel it fits better under Google Maps Tips and Tricks with the Connect Forum tag, I am open to your suggestion. In that category, posts often include “How-tos” for Connect, and the “Mark as Solution” feature—though that, too, can sometimes be misused.

Once again, thanks for your thoughtful engagement. I still remember your detailed and useful comment on my meetup proposal—it was a true kickoff that even led Googler Deni to suggest filling out the form with our suggestions. I hope those suggestions will reach discussion at the Googler level too.

2. About Merging of Posts

My intention here is to encourage a healthy discussion so that we can arrive at a practice for the sustainable community.

I understand that merging recaps is a policy matter, and no single moderator can reverse it. From MoniD’s reply, I gathered that the issue might be taken up for further discussion in the private forum, and if a change is agreed upon, it will be communicated to the moderator community. Thanyou @MoniDi.

Though my case may differ, some Local Guides have personally expressed their disappointment to me. For example, they shared that when one person’s recap wasn’t merged, theirs was. This inconsistency hurts—especially for first-time writers who put effort into their posts. Once merged, their individual identity and perspective are lost.

Sometimes, I’ve seen participants write more insightful recaps than even the host, particularly from a sustainability perspective. But in 90% of meetups, only the host writes the recap. In the remaining 10%, either hosts encourage attendees to share, or enthusiastic participants write about their experience. These should be encouraged. A good practice could be that the host links participants’ posts in the official recap.

We often allow posts that don’t perfectly meet community standards, just to encourage participation. By the same logic, we should allow meetup participants to share their experiences—even if they avoid using the word “recap.” If needed, moderators can simply ask them to edit or remove that word.

Yes, @AjitThite ji, I completely agree with you. I will always cherish my interaction with the first Local Business Champion during the Connect Live event and the Mega Meetup.

@YatraWithSurya your above statement refects the true beauty of our community which ,makes us sustainable community. :bouquet:

Yes Sir, I hope so too. One more point: as you are the admin of one of the largest Indian Local Guides WhatsApp groups, we should encourage our fellow Local Guides—especially the newer ones—to contribute creatively. They should also follow the “read before write” approach when sharing their meetup experiences, to avoid repetitive content and maintain the uniqueness of each post.

Earlier as well, I shared my own meetup experiences with a different approach, and those posts were not merged. Several attendees of meetups hosted by me also wrote their experiences from different perspectives, as we discussed during our sessions, and those were not merged either. So I don’t blame anyone. I am satisfied.

When an issue arises, I prefer to raise my concern politely—which, of course, I have learned from senior Local Guides like you.

Once again, thank you for your kind hospitality and the dinner at your residence. I will always cherish the quality time we spent together in Bengaluru during Connect Live, the Mega Meetup, and at your home.

Yes, Siddharth, I also hope it will be considered. Thank you for sharing your observation as well.

Yes, Supriya ji, it was indeed related to sustainability. During Connect Live, you shared a woollen gift item with all of us, truly promoting the idea of sustainability—hats off to you! We thoroughly enjoyed not only the sessions at the Google office, but also our time together in the hotel lobby, as well as while travelling to and from the event venue. I will always cherish those wonderful moments from Connect Live.

Thank you for taking it into consideration. :bouquet: :folded_hands:

Thank you! I really appreciate your encouragement and will continue sharing my content with the community.

Hi @SharmaK

Thanks for your reply.

The new and current categories and what tags are available under each category is in my view far from ideal.

I changed the category to ensure the Connect forum tag could be assigned to your topic. I believe the Sustainability tag should be used on topics related to environment, climate, and the like.

Logically discussing issues related to our forum and the management of Connect under the heading Google Maps Tips & Tricks makes little to no sense. I guess that is a compromise related to a desire to having only a few categories.

Googlers have stated that topics related to support on Connect issues should be in Google Maps Tips & Tricks with the Connect forum tag.

I hope the merge issue can be solved.

From my perspective I would like to see more substantive posts/topics and fewer thank you-replies that leaves nothing more than what leaving a like does. That could make the quality topics stand out more and not drown as quickly. Especially if all recaps of the same event should continue to be merged into one topic.

A way to selectively decrease the visibility of all the See my achievement-topics (bragging posts) and let me just drop a photo-topics could also be helpful in making a better Connect.

Finally, I would like to mention another serious issue with the current category structure. The category Google Maps Contributions stories is very often misused to share review-style promotions of places etc. without any relation to making contributions on Maps. In my opinion this category should be used to discuss and share experiences related to making Maps contributions. And not to share tourist promotion which fits better on Maps and has a 1000-fold larger audience on Maps.

Some very important and much needed points @MortenCopenhagen

Pleasure is ours, respected @SharmaK as you have come all the way and gave company… thanks a million for your wonderful presence.

Hope, they will consider merging with a different view in future - let us hope for the best.

Once again thanking you for all your support…
Most sincerely with sincere gratitude,
