Promoting Other peoples business using Film

https://goo.gl/maps/vypWQRMz2W13pXGc7
I started this little project a while back, Allow me to explain the motivation and thought process behind this.

I would often walk into a shop with my Video camera, and I always ask if the person running the shop would care to give me a short, fun description on what the shop sells, and I will post it to Facebook. No Charge…

Many shop owners are suspicious and I don’t blame them. The reason I do this little bit of free marketing is actually allotted to do with me. One of the first skills I had to learn was to present myself in an open an honest way. I had to “sell” me filming the shop, in a few seconds. And I promise you it takes practice.

And then I get to practice some filming on the fly. Now, how boring are socks? Yep, they are not that exciting, but in one take, I got this clip, I was just been myself joking around at the end, and it worked out beautifully.

I first posted this video to Facebook and got Mr Nicharry to friend me, and sure the video has not gone viral and probably has under 500 hits, but that’s Ok, it’s 500 people who now know about his business, and it’s a total Win-win situation

Things to Remember: Before you film, you need to get permission, be polite and honest, tell the shop owner you are practising your filming techniques and want to promote their store at the same time.
Get the details of the place, make sure you have a website for the place you promote, the Telephone number and other details, ASK. Be Professional about it.

If the shop keeper does not want to be filmed, apologise and leave immediately. But be Polite at all times. It’s not as easy as you think, and you have to harden your skin, as I have had more people saying No to me than Yes. So even I have room to improve and practice.

If the filming was a mess up, then don’t post it, wait a week, go back to the shop owner and apologise and allow the Shop owner to take the lead, Most times they will want to have another go.

Get Creative, be fun, have fun, if you are sending out good vibes you will see how these random people around you respond in a very awesome positive way>

I just want to apologise in advance, I just realized I might be in a very grey area when it comes down to violating one of googles policies concerning advertising, I am in no way affiliated or stand to profit in any way from Nic Harry - Paul Watson ( That’s me )

Nic Harrys Sock Shop can be found at 66 Wale St, Cape Town City Centre, Cape Town, 8001

Saludos Farid

@Mongoose - I enjoyed watching your sock video, especially at the very end (great viewing angle).

What you are doing would fall under Google My Business, not the Local Guides Program, where you can charge money for what you are doing vs providing your own personal review or photos (videos) of a business (Nick Harry) or place. You can join the Google My Business Community. This video would not be considered a Local Guide review. It would be considered an advertisement.

Cheers,

Karen

I wanted to explain to people on here how to enhance their reach on Google Connect …

We all post items about Google business, giving reviews and ratings. I do not charge anyone for making videos as I have stated in my write up.

I do apologise for being in a bit of a grey zone, but I do hope that my explanation shows other members on here how they can think creatively and help people out in the area they are in, and also help themselves.

To make up for it , Here is one of my Videos showcasing The Cape Town Carnivalhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pIXX27yiXo&t=19s

@Mongoose - this Cape Town Carnival video is fine. Too long for a Google Maps video upload. The max is 30 seconds.

The small business video example you have shown is a Google My Business video style, not a Local Guides review. It does not matter if you received monetary compensation or not. That type of video style will get rejected by Google since it is not your personal review of this business, but can seen as an advertisement.

Check out how to properly shoot a review video as a Local Guide. You can shoot yourself as the reviewer, with some limitations.

Cheers,

Karen

Karen , the video is a link and not upload, the video is hosted on youtube and has only a small size. the bandwidth is from youtube.

I do apologise for trying to help other people, I was under the impression this is what we were doing. If I ask a business owner to describe his business and then I had my "review " then its still my review.

I am trying to show other people who post here that we can make a difference by helping other people or business while we are helping ourselves. Also note I am including this as an example, a way that I enjoyed doing, I also hope that others will share their ideas.

I mean no harm or disrespect but sometimes we have to fight for what we believe in, and not just accept things because someone was obey the rules to the exact wording , without trying to see the human side of it.

Really a good way to capture the place spirit. thanks you for sharing those film making tips and examples

Hi @Mongoose

I was just scrolling down LG connect, and was looking into the reply posts. It was really nice to come to your post. This post is quite interesting. What you said is correct. Even I had same experience with shopkeepers.

I also tag you in my new post about trekking to a Temple. Please do give a look at it and give your feedback.
