Promote your Mapping Cause with Google Earth (#CommunityChallenge)

Are you advocating for accessibility, clean the world or driven by other special interests related to the Google Local Guides Program? If so, we challenge you to take us on a digital journey and tell your story with Google Earth.

Make the best of Google Earth’s new project capabilities and push your creative limits.

The Community Challenge project has ended, but you can still have fun and take advantage of this powerful Google Earth tool.

[old info related to the original project]

About the Local Guides #CommunityChallenge
The Community Challenge is an initiative by Local Guides World, a proud (unofficial) community of contributors to Google Maps. Our first #CommunityChallenge was held in January 2019 and for LGW members only. This new #CommunityChallence is aimed at all Local Guides on all (social media) platforms. It is presented in collaboration with the Community Exchange Program, a network of unofficial Local Guide communities.

The mission of our Local Guides #CommunityChallenge is to leverage the output by Local Guides. As Local Guides, we like to rise above the goals we set and push our performance. The aim is to inspire and showcase great examples. To raise the bar, so to speak.

For each #CommunityChallenge category we will appoint a special jury to select the best entries. In addition, we shall have the title “Community’s Choice” winner, the most favourite entry voted for by you.

Special Interest Theme - Community Challenge Terms & Conditions

  • You should own all content that you share in your project or have permission to use it. Please respect intellectual property;
  • Entries need to be submitted by 2 P.M. UTC on January 15th, 2020 by providing us with the public share link (view only) of the Google Earth project;
  • To be eligible for the competition element of this challenge, your submission needs to be in scope with this category: “Special Interest Theme”. When you have questions about the definition of this category, feel free to tag me, the project manager (@JeroenM) below;
  • All Local Guides are invited (across social media platforms) to participate. Since we wish to ensure that all entries abide by the official Local Guides Program Rules, entries are only valid when submitted here on Local Guides Connect, the only official online community for Local Guides;
  • Individuals, teams or communities may submit more than one entry. After all, this is all about practicing our skills and pushing our limits. You may wish to showcase different ideas;
  • Jury members and members of the project team can participate, but are exempt from voting for their own entries.
  • Entries are by default shared under Creative Commons License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). In case you share your content on other terms, you need to explicitly say so.
  • Your public vote is only eligible when you cast a single vote per category (aka one vote per person).
  • Judging starts on January 16th, 2020. The time needed by the Jury, however, very much depends on the number of submitted entries.
  • Individuals can cast their “Community’s Choice” vote from January 1st until January 30th (2 P.M. UTC).
  • Besides on other social media platforms, the results of our Community Challenge will be published on Local Guides Connect at the new LGC Achievement Board.

Hi @Kwiksatik besides the other Google Earth Project that we talked about (community showcase category?) I like to challenge you to submit an entry to our #CommunityChallenge in this Special Interest category. More than advocating here on LGC for your cause, I personally think it might be a nice way to leverage the bond between the female entrepreneurs in your area. What do you think?

Special Interest Category can be focused to include the images relating to the social culture / Festivals/ Functions of the respective region / country where the local guide lives.

Such as

  • Holi in India

  • Thingyan (water festival) in Burma

  • La Tomatina of Spain

  • Samba of Brazil

  • Wedding customs of different countries
    and so on

Wow @Dhanasekaran_Muthu that is a great list of potential topics for Google Earth Projects. When it comes to focus on culture, events that are in a certain area or country, it would better to submit your project in the “My World” category. To be honest, the whole competition element is just to encourage people to reach high with their achievements when building a Google Earth Project. The whole point of the project is to encourage people to get hands-on experience with Google Earth and inspired what you can do with this great app capability.

I hope you are all ready working on your first project. I created My First Google Earth Project yesterday.

Don’t forget, you can submit as many projects as you want and your project will get featured in our weekly update.

I got permission from @ErmesT to mention his Google Earth Project titled Accessible Paths.

@ErmesT was reluctant to share his project here, as he is already working on a replacement project that - hopefully - he may be able to share before the official deadline of this #CommunityChallenge.

Personally, I think that all examples (even not competition worthy) are welcome to be shared as part of this project. After all, the ethos of the project is to get inspired and encouraged to get hands-on experience and to leverage our skills. The competition element is only to push us to do our best. Some people like to see some examples to get enough confidence to give it a go themselves, this I added his project here.

The funny thing is, I expected content related to Ermes his Local Guides Clean The World project, perhaps in collaboration with the king of Google My Maps, @DavidTito . Instead, he beats Team #OneAccessiblity to it.

Of course, I hope that @Kashifmisidia @ChinonsoOnukwugha and other members of the #OneAccessibilty team will share something similar soon.

Here is @ErmesT his post about his Accessible Paths project:

Thank you for tagging Mr @JeroenM

As I said, this project is work in progress, and is not in contrast with the OneAccessibility program. Is a parallel view, with three years of activities (featured by Google in 2017).

I will be happy to share my experience with the local guides who wants to participate in your challenge.

Local Guides clean the world is already in Google Earth, on my private view. Unfortunately, as I already mentioned to you, it is not possible to import KML files and share the results. So we will have to make it again. Hundreds of places, with photos and links and videos. It is a big challenge for me and @DavidTito . It will take a lot of time to create the whole story on Google earth

@ErmesT Ahhhh. We are talking at different frequencies. My mistake for not being more specific. Sorry for causing the misunderstanding.

The KML file that you and David are managing on Google My Maps is not what I was referring to or suggesting that you should build (currently) in Google Earth. That is like your overall project file with all the achievements, etc. Like a full dynamic report. Instead, I was more thinking about the opportunity to use Google Earth to create something that would be like a digital brochure for your project. Where you would communicate your message to either people outside Local Guides or to Local Guides.

Personally, I see Google Earth Projects as an alternative to a Powerpoint Presentation. A slides-presentation-tool with maps power injected. You could, for example, use the pretty looking Google Earth Project to lead people to the correct Local Guides Connect Pages, your “My Maps”, etc. So instead of telling the complete story of your project, you could use it as a navigation system to your resources and a place to do a sales pitch for what you are advocating in a sexy way.

It is only a suggestion as part of the exercise of the #CommunityChallenge is to come up with ideas about how to use Google Earth Projects as a Local Guide.

Just for further clarification, my nudge to the OneAccessibility project to invite them to participate was by no means intended to put your project against theirs. My only comment was that the special interest topic that you are presenting here was not what I guessed (read: green topic instead of accessibility topic).

Before I forget! Thank you very much for offering your support to help any Local Guides that need guidance in creating a Google Earth Project and your participation in the conversation about Google Earth Projects for Local Guides. It is very much appreciated. Particularly since the way you look at things.

I shall repeat your offer in the upcoming weekly project report, as not all interested people would necessarily follow this particular category.

Correct @ErmesT even skilled person as myself, this is a challenge, but I can give a sneak peek

actually let’s use @PaulPavlinovich 36 walk-in Google Earth mode and will save CTW for later, remember this a working progress

To embed and animate is much beyond.

But I do have something else up my sleeve but you will have to wait and see it in my Connect live 19 [Recap]

shortly,

I think this is a long consuming exercise for the time being/. But My maps are probably more familiar for everyone

@JeroenM Google Earth is a very slow platform this took me quite some time actually

@JeroenM I’ve just learned something, it’s actually much quicker and easier to create a My map from start download Kml and drop into a new project in Google Earth and your halfway there

@Dhanasekaran_Muthu of course but I suggest starting with a Mymap that excepts everything from Youtube to PDF from animation to landscape image, Google map link in fack any link.

Have fun

@DavidTito thank you for joining the conversation. I agree that for certain things Google My Maps remains (by far) the better tool for the job. As I said yesterday in my comment above, I personally look at Google Earth more as a Powerpoint Presentation. In My Maps you can create sets of locations to seperate data. In Google Earth your story is linear and there is currently no way to group “feature” items in groups.

I am keen to learn your short-cut to save time by importing KML data into Google Earth first, so I am going to try that out later.

I love your screenshot of the Google Earth Project that you are building in relation to Paul’s 36 Photo Walk. Please show us your work, once you are done. In this case, your project is all about using it for a Meet-Up Recap for which we have a #CommunityChallenge category:

#CommunityChallenge Categories:

That looks cool @DavidTito you can make journeys in Google Earth now that let you explore through the eyes of another person to see their places.

Hi @Kwiksatik ,
I am in conversation with a number of Local Guides that are all kind of halfway building their own GE Project and getting worried about the deadline of the Community Challenge. Relax, because we have decided to push the deadline forward by two weeks!

Very much looking forward to seeing yours.
Happy holidays!
