When I see my photos, the total view above the photos is different from the number on the graph. Can anybody please explain what happened out of curiosity?
Wait a minute, the total views above the photos is related to the total views on the graph.
From a algebraic degree, let x be total view yesterday and y be the gain of total views above the photo today.
Today’s total views above the photo is x+y.
Today’s total views on the graph is x+2y.
Hello @Porex_2107_2024 ,
the numbers are not all updated at the same time. This morning, I also noticed the total number of views is different on the mobile app and the desktop. But they will catch up.
Some more facts @Porex_2107_2024:
I am also tracking the view numbers of all my photos daily and noticed, the total number of views is always behind my counts. Sometimes, it is updated within 12 hours, other times it takes several days to catch up.
I’ve noticed the same variation in total photo views between the number shown above the photos and the graph. This seems to be a common observation among many Local Guides.
Based on what I understand, the discrepancy might occur due to:
1. Delayed Updates: The graph and total views above the photos update at different times.
2. View Attribution: Some views might take longer to reflect in the total above the photos, but they are included in the graph earlier.
3. Data Processing: Google Maps might process and display data differently for the graph and the photo totals, leading to temporary mismatches.
While this can be confusing, it usually resolves itself over time as both numbers sync. If the variation persists, you could try reporting it through Google Maps support for clarification.
I hope this helps! Let me know if anyone has more insights to share.
Ha ha @Porex_2107_2024 no need to jump to hardcore maths. It’s pretty simple.
The number 41611195 is total views on your Photos+ Videos+360 Spheres
Either one of these is yet to update or all are yet to update once that completes it must tally with your 2nd screenshot. You can check them individually and find the ambiguity by yourself if all adds to same value then it’s just delay in overall update.
When the word Contribution is used it doesn’t only represent just Photos or Video or both.
It’s more than that. Everything that you have contributed in map is not Just limited to photos and videos.
It has photos, videos, reviews, 360 sphere, edited places etc. if you go to badges you will understand it photo badge has different media count and views and so is directors badge. These things were discussed long ago in leaderboard if you have joined it @AdamGT looks after it and provide monthly updates.
I ran a similar post weeks ago
The views on my photos are ~ 152 Million
While the other ~ 10 millions views are on my edits. The second count is always kinda approx or rounded off. Here it could be ~ 8 Million more than photo count or even ~ 15 million more than the photo views of 152 million but the rounded off number is shown as 160 Million.
I hope your issue has been solved. I think the total views in the graph is only for the photos where as on the other place it is the views of combined photos and videos. @Porex_2107_2024
The views on the graph is still blowing wildly but the views above the photo is the same from last night (which means it’s freezed), but the views on the graph = x+3y somehow.
(x, y) = (39636733, 987231)
I did see this before @tony_b@Porex_2107_2024 and @Shaunak, however somewhat different, because the number under My Contributions did catch up within hours or less.
Since yesterday, it is different.
I did count all views on the individual photos exceptionally yesterday evening and as usual this morning and the number above the graph was considerably higher.
I tend to believe @Porex_2107_2024’s formula “views on the graph = x+3y” is at least roughly correct.
Original, I was thinking it is a difference between mobile and desktop, but in reality it is the inconsistency between the total views above the graph and those under My Contributions. The latter are equal on desktop and mobile.
I think when it comes to Google maps much is left to assumptions there is no yardstick. You calculate views on daily basis and from last 9 days there is no specific pattern. You have staggering 2.32% jump on 15th Dec what explains that ? You had 1.53% in 19th and yesterday 2.49% which to me is not much strange. The views swing big sometimes. Fom my graph and views I can say for first time since February they are little bit realistic but they are still 85-90% of what I used to get when I had fewer numbers of media and less featuring photos. X+3y fits perfectly here but it doesn’t fit elsewhere. I would love to record number on daily basis even that doesn’t happen the views are stuck for month.
The number of map viewers fluctuate everyday so I believe seeking pattern is good for a mapper there is no standard way to tell specially if country is tourist rich. Btw i misunderstood your query earlier
After the count above the graph showed a big increase again this morning, I noticed now (~1 pm UTC) a decrease - still more then the cumulated views of all individual photos, but moving in the right direction.
It was probably a programming glitch, they are correcting now. @Porex_2107_2024@tony_b@Trail_blazer@Shaunak
Yeah @WilfriedB earlier the difference in my case was some 200k ish but now the difference is negligibly 14k. The up curve definitely got me excited i thought we are back to normal
Maybe something is going on. Curve is back to flat shape
I’m yet to complete 24 hours to conclude the exact change and let’s see what monthly data update has for us just a week to go. I definitely feel there is some improvement.
@Porex_2107_2024@Trail_blazer@WilfriedB You guys have certainly piqued my curiosity. Suddenly tonight I’m seeing a flat graph for December only. Didn’t it previously graph a wider time period?
To me, it seems the software feeding the graph is broken and the graph meaningless for now.
The individual counts increase in the same way, as they do since April and the total views above My Contributions are updated at least one day later, always representing the total of the individual views. @tony_b@Porex_2107_2024@Trail_blazer
@tony_b I think graph in general represent 3 weeks or 20 days I guess maybe a month I’m not super sure however the green +numbers are generally the current week. You can see the week as the green section the graph. Everyday the dates extend by +1 D. After few hours it must be 2nd Dec to 23rd dec for you and the week should be 16th dec to 23rd.
The data numbers varies so much that it’s tough to draw conclusions at least at my end and given that our contributions getting bigger bigger day by day the numbers are bound to change further. I think it will make sense for people with fewer contributions in my case have an some 27k contributions 12k photos . I have noticed a few things maybe we learn some more in future.
@WilfriedB@Trail_blazer Today my graph looks more “normal”. Same numbers, different graph. But no worries. I only ever look at my graph when other LGs start complaining about troubles with theirs.
