I would like to share a few insights related to the poetry styles of our country which were popular in India. My emphasis on this post is to spread a little awareness of our culture which India is proud to have achieved over the past 6-7 centuries.
Urdu Poetry
Urdu language is based on many languages like Persian, Turkish, Arabic, and even the local languages like Khadi Boli. Urdu Poetry gained importance from the 14th Century. The various types of Urdu Poetry are many, enlisting a few below :
Ghazal - Poem with fixed number of verses and a repeated rhyme
Qasida - Poetry in praise of someone
Masnavi - Rhyming Couplets
Marsiya - A poem to mourn the death of a loved one
Nazm - Poem with a central theme
Wasokht - A poetry focusing on unrequited love
Persian Poetry
Persian language was first spoken in India in the early 11th Century when the Turks arrived in India. Avestan language was spoken in Iran which is loosely considered as the base for the foundation of Persian language.
The origin and basis of Persian poetry is considered to be love as the best Persian poets based their works on the topic of love. Some of the famous Persian Poets were :
Hafez
Amir Khusrow
Ghalib
Chandar Bhan Brahman
Credit to the above knowledge I gleaned goes to :
Prof Sharif Husain Qasmi who is an eminent scholar of Persian language in India
Dr. Aleem Ashraf Khan who is an associate professor specializing in Urdu and Persian language
Posting below a few places where this historic poetry can be still found
Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu Hind - Oldest Urdu literary institution for the preservation and promotion of Urdu Language
Hi @Ssiddharth2000
Your post could be interesting, but how does it matches with Connect and the Local Guides program?
Can you try to edit your post to make it relevant for our community? How do I write a topic on Connect?
@Ssiddharth2000 it’s great post with lots of information about Urdu poetry… But there is no relevance with the connect platform and google maps… My suggestion would be… Try to relate it to places like a library or place were such poets used to come together… Or relate it to a museum or other buildings were such poetry is stored or its memories can still be found… That will make it relevant to the connect platform…
Hey @ErmesT I have added a few relevant and historical places associated with Urdu and Persian poetry, would love to hear your feedback. Going forward I will make sure to post Maps relevant links as well.
Hey Sarath, I have made a few additions to my post and included places that are historical and important to the history of Urdu and Persian poetry. Would love to hear your feedback. Going forward, I will make sure to add Maps relevant links as well.
