Planquin of Parvati, Dulhadeo Temple, Khajuraho

Dulhadev Shiva Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva is famous for its magnificent and unmatched craftsmanship.
There is a special figure depicted on the outer wall of this temple in which two Kahars (means they are the men from the community who carries palanquins on their shoulders) are carrying a decorated palanquin on their shoulders. Actually this is the scene of Parvati’s farewell when she is coming to Shiva’s house after tying the sacred knot of marriage.

Triyuginarayan village where Shiva proposed to Parvati is said to be the site of the divine wedding of Shiva and Parvati where Vishnu performed the marriage formalities as Parvati’s brother and Brahma officiated as the priest. It is believed that this place is located at the confluence of Mandakini and Son Ganga in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand.

This is why when newly married couples enter this temple, it is customary to enter together holding each other’s hands. I tried to highlight only one feature of this main temple which is depicted in the form of this palanquin and a customary tradition associated with this wedding of Shiva and Parvati.
