On iOS some of my photos are shown under reviews and not photo….
I figured out that these are the places where I first did select the POI and did add pictures. When I select the photo first and choose the POI, this does not happen. I see on both Android and IOS much more „reviews“, but the detail reviews with the pictures only on iOS.

As an Android user here is how I believe Google Maps decide where to show our photos under reviews in our contribution lists.
Only photos uploaded to a revirew will be shown under reviews.
Both photos uploaded to reviews and photos uploaded directly to places (not as part of a review) will show up under photos.
Two years ago or so Google Maps would automatically link photos uploaded to a place to our review of the place, but this is no longer the case.
Does what you described happen only when using IOS for uploading the photos?
The order of reviews depend on your recent search activity. This could explain why you don’t see your reviews in the same order across Android vs IOS.
Or are the total number of reviews consistently different (after servers has time to sync)?

Photos under review are shown when you add the photos with the review, otherwise they only appear on the listing. This is the same on Android. It did not used to work this way @TorM they used to show in both places.

I understand you, but your answers are not a match to my issue.
I do normally upload pictures in the following way: Selecting picture, selecting POI, press upload. all is fine!
sometimes I do this:
I select on Maps a place (in the past it was never a problem), there is the option at pictures, when I use this, than the picture is not uploaded to the place directly, but is shown in the reviews of the place. So about 100 reviews where added, but these reviews have no stars, what is a bug as well, but only the picture!!!
So my reviews are increased by 100 but I only see them on iOS in detail. In both Android and IOS the review count went up by 100.
i believe it is a clear mistake in processing the uploads, maybe related to a new update.

Clearly a bug. Or maybe you uploaded too many photos for the system to cope 
If it persists, then sharing some screenshots illustrating the discrepancies would be helpful.

Your photo is listed as an update. But usually we need to add some text also when posting an update.
The place is very unusual since the review tap is not shown. Maybe because no reviews were added (yet?).
Same thing under Shu.
So I guess the issue is more on the business side than on your side. Did you add the photos as updated?

No, I did upload it via the option: Add a picture. First selecting the place and than the function add a picture
