When we decided to visit this ancient Heritage stepwell in Adalaj, Gujarat, we had little idea what to expect, as the approach is unassuming with a temple in the front. But what lay ahead underneath simply takes your breath away - an intricately carved 5 storey stepwell with three entrances leading down to the well with an octagonal top. Built by Queen Rudabai in 1499, ancient travellers used it for water and resting and the temperature inside is much cooler than outside, with open top architecture for natural light and air.
Sharing some more pictures of the ancient heritage beauty. Photographing it was an absolute delight with my mobile and always wish for more;)
This heritage site is also locally known as ‘Rani ki vav’ (Queen’s well) and is around 19kms from Ahmedabad, Gujarat and is well connected by rail, road and air.
Hope you get a chance to visit the place someday and click better pictures;)
Cheers!
