Photo Updates1

Do photos from updates in Google places eventually go into the photos section?

Hi @MapMaster
Welcome to Connect, and thank you for asking.
The answer is yes, a photo added in Updates is also visible on the Photos section of the listing, like the photos attached to a review

It means that a photo should be added in a listing only once.

Interesting! Also, when I look at my contributions, why does the photo sometimes say user photo hasn’t been uploaded? It was said on my most viewed photo at 38k views. Interesting stuff!

Can you provide some specific example, @MapMaster ?
We cannot see what is not visible, and actually near 230 of your photos and 7 of your reviews are private (not publicly visible).
If you are looking for a specific answer please provide detailed information, otherwise we can just give you some general answers, and this will not help you to fix any potential issue
Thank you

This photo of the Mexican restaurant is my most viewed photo, and for some reason it says that the user photo has not been uploaded.

Right now, it is at 37,992 views.

@MapMaster
The message “No user photo available here” is Google Maps’ way of informing us that that photo is “private” (visible only to us).
Considering the username you chose (MapMaster) I thought you knew.
An image can be made private for various reasons:

  • Because the image is old, and the business reports it as no longer representative of the activity. It happened to me even with images with over a million views.
  • Because during a scan of the contributions the filter found it not compliant with the rules. Periodically, with the update of the filters, the scan is repeated, and an image can be removed even after a long time.
  • Because the review the photo was attached to has been made private, and consequently the photo is no longer publicly visible

Obviously the filter can also make mistakes, so it is possible to appeal to have our contribution reinstated.

This has little to do with your initial question, so if this is the problem I think you should update the topic title.
As I said in my previous answer

In this case the first thing to do is to understand what is visible to everyone and what is private. A very simple way to do this is to view your profile (this link) in a browser in incognito mode, and compare what you see with your private profile (the one you see when you are logged in to Google Maps)

Once you understand what the hidden images and reviews are, you can check if they adhere to the policies
However I already tell you that many of your visible images (I can’t comment on the ones I can’t see) are also heavily against the rules.

As I said, you can appeal. However, doing so without removing the violations could have the opposite result: having further content removed. Obviously, what you decide to do is entirely up to you.
If you want to appeal now, here is the form: Account investigation for contributions not visible on Google Maps
If you would like help identifying the violating content first, let us know

Are you saying I am violating the rules? If so, what should I do make sure my account doesn’t get terminated?

Also, haha, I understand why you thought I knew because of my username, but I put that there because I wanted to be able to be good at updating google maps, where either I succeed or learn, two attributes to that of a master.

I filled out the form. Hopefully my pictures will be visible since they aren’t meant to be offensive, but rather helpful, since most of the time, any info a business may disclose is usually in the form of written passages that can’t be said on their websites. Like, an exhibit at a college

So, what images are against the rules, and what should I do to fix it? I want to be a local Maps guide, and I don’t want to end up violating the rules, nor go against the purpose of being a local maps guide.

Hi @MapMaster , and sorry for the late reply.
You should be careful about duplicates, redundancy and especially duplicates across location (the sanction for the last one is the removal from the program)
Here below a few examples
Duplicate across locations (same photo posted on two different listings

A photo here has been posted 3 times

Another duplicate

There are also videos posted more than once.

I see. Yeah, they were duplicates because I thought they weren’t uploaded properly, much less at all. Does this mean I’m in trouble? Or does it mean that they’re just not shown? Also, should I do my due diligence and remove them?

You should remove them, @MapMaster , because they can put you in trouble, especially when the same photo is uploaded in more than one place.
According to the Local Guides community policy - Google Maps Help
"Users who duplicate photos across locations or post images that infringe on copyrights will be removed from the program."

Sure thing! Yeah, some are duplicates, but I didn’t upload any copyrighted images.

Just two questions:

  1. am I removed from the program?
  2. Does images from the Internet count as copyrighted material?

Hi @MapMaster

  • no, you are not removed from the program, otherwise you would not be able to write here.

Of course. Everything published on the web is copyrighted by default, unless differently declared by the author of the photos. A violation of the copyright can be managed differently by different countries (in my country a copyright violation may be fined up to 3000 € for each photo. If repeated, it can end in being in jail for years). Here below on my signature there’s a link to a post with a detailed explanation about rules and laws related to copyright

Awesome, thank you! By the way; when will I get a response from Google about the survey I filled out, to handle anything flagged?

You will not. Normally in less than two months an account is checked, and everything that is adhering with the policies will be released

Got it. I’m currently checking my account to see if there are any photos that say that the users photo is not available.
