[Photo Tips] Simple Guide to shoot Time Lapse Videos – TravellerG

A hidden treasure in Your Mobile!!! Do It Yourself!!! You will Enjoy!!!.

You might have seen the videos where the ‘Clouds flow very fast’ ? That is what we are going to do here.

Have a look at this video to have a hang of this Post!

Time Lapse (26 Sec) Video

When we touch Time Lapse Photography, we need to know two Terms:

  1. Time Lapse: When the Camera is FIXED &
  2. Hyper-Lapse (Hyperlapse): When the camera Moves around. (Details, later)

So here, let us see how to shoot “Time Lapse Videos”, step by step. Most of the modern Mobile Cameras have this as a “Built In” Feature. You can also download Apps (we will see later) for using Time-Lapse & Hyperlapse.

Items Needed for this shoot:

Mobile Camera (or Dedicated Camera) with charged battery, (2) Tripod Stand (or similar arrangement, to hold the mobile very stable).

(I have used 4 Mobiles for this post & majorly, Samsung S9 Plus)

Setting Up:

Step-1: Launch the Camera App in your Mobile.

Step-2: Search for “Time Lapse” or “Hyperlapse” option in the Mode Menu (Usually, under Mode, there are option like Photo or Auto, Video, Panorama, Slow motion, Pro or Manual, Food, “Time Lapse”, etc.) & select.

Photo showing the menu in Honor View 10

Step-3: Set up your Tripod, so that your frame will not be facing direct sun / very bright light. (See the Photo). Example, if you want to shoot moving clouds, opt for timing between, say 8 AM 10 AM or 4 PM to 6 PM and direct camera away from the sun. For Sunrise/Sunset, (soft lights), we can face the sun.

The set-up, I used, today.

Step-4: Mount your Camera with Mode in ‘Time Lapse’. (Honor View 10 Menu)

The option in Samsung S9 Plus is Hyperlapse. (If the camera is placed on a Tripod, then, Hyperlapse mode can be used for Time Lapse, as the camera will not be moving - details on request).

Step-5: Select the ‘Time Interval’ Option, if available (EX. In Samsung S9 Plus, we have the options for 4X, 8X, 16X & 32X [+ one Auto Option too! Will explain later, if needed] – 32X means that, after shooting the video will be played back 32 times faster, than the normal speed.) Many Mobiles may have only ONE (default) SPEED. You can use separate App, if you still want to speed up. Or use a third party App for Time Lapse shooting.

Step-6: Start shooting like your normal video. Remember, if you have opted, say 16X (many mobiles have this as default, I feel), a ‘Time Lapse Video’ of 16 Minutes will be played in 1 Minute. (Hope it is clear).

Note:

In some mobiles, once the video is recorded, it can be played back or can be exported / copied (in MP4 format), without any additional processing (Ex. OnePlus 7 Pro, Galaxy S9 Plus, Honor View 10, etc). Whereas in some mobiles (many older versions & some of the new brands), you need to save it as MP4, by playing the recorded file from your Gallery (inbuilt App will guide you). In some mobile (Ex. Samsung S6 Edge), while saving, it will offer options for selecting the playback Speed (4X, 8X,16X & 32X) – you can select & save the video in MP4 format.

Here is a 30 seconds video, shot today morning (13th June, 2019, 9:15 AM, at Yercaud, Tamil Nadu, India)

Settings (used in Samsung S 9 Plus):

The camera in Hyperlapse with selectable speed as 32X. I ensured the Lens is clean & mounted it on the Tripod.

Do some trials to reach your imagination… Cloud movement (as in the sample), Sun Rise, Sun Set, Flower bud to full Flower, etc. are fascinating shots…

Hi @TravellerG ,

Thanks for mentioning us!

I will pick a location (as soon as possible), to give this a try.

Should an urban environment work as well, correct? : ]

Hi @TravellerG

Nice topics

My questions

  1. When you record time lapse. How many minutes of hours did you wait?

  2. Don’t you get bored

  3. Or you leave the mobile phone just sit all alone

  4. What was the tripod you use. Since you use for 4 camera

Sorry I have so many questions…

@sonnyNg For sure Yes as you said, we can capture the same in urban area aswell . Only thing is our focus should not be on direct sun light and a greater coverage of sky that would create a amazing video :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks @TravellerG for explaining it so well and creating a proper easy to use guide for this Timelapse and Hyperlapse Topic. This will be quite handy and helpful to know about these.

I would like to know, how do I further increase the speed, I am sharing an example of TimeLapse I created. This would be very helpful for me, please do share your reviews sir.

Sorry being late… dear @Ddimitra

I am happy only to answer questions…

Question & Answers:

  1. When you record time lapse. How many minutes of hours did you wait?

For your info, some Professional Time-Lapse Photographers do this over the whole Year!, believe me!!. If you have noticed the 'Time Lapse Videos of Seasonal Changes", etc (National Geographic Magazine, etc.), you will understand the effort behind these photography!!!

  1. Don’t you get bored

Well, this is very difficult question! There are photographers who monitor Time Lapse, frequently. Many Photographers, enjoy this - I too.

  1. Or you leave the mobile phone just sit all alone

Most of the Time Lapse Videos, I shoot are shot unattended; however, we need to monitor for Battery level, Storage space, etc.

  1. What was the tripod you use. Since you use for 4 camera

Any standard (strong tripod, since wind is usually involved in the scene) Mobile Tripod is OK; I used two tripods = Amazon & Star brands.

Sorry I have so many questions…

I feel that the questions & answers will help other LGs too.

With regards

Very sorry being late dear friend @sonnyNg -

Thank you so much for your kind response & volunteering comment to motivate LGs - when time permits, kindly show us your sample, if permitted.

As rightly answered by our @VickyKrish , any place & time is OK, except very bright light directly to the camera (you know this aspect)!

With regards
