Photo Tips - AE, AEL & EV - TravellerG

Hi…All

What is AE, AEL & EV ?

These are, very simple, if you understand them properly…

  1. AE = Automatic Exposure or Auto Exposure

Then What is Exposure?

Exposure stands for the brightness of the photo (image)

And, the brightness of a photo, in general, depends on the joint effect of Aperture (f value) & Shutter Speed (seconds).

Most of today’s Digital / Mobile cameras have this facility; AE enables us, to take ‘Light-Balanced’ photos, without, over or under exposure; this was a major task, during the film era.

  1. AEL = Auto Exposure Lock. Shall we deal this term, later for some reason, please?

  2. EV = Exposure Value

EV is a numerical number (Typically, +3, +2,+1, 0, -1, -2 & -3). If ‘Ideal Exposure Value’ (Normal Exposure / brightness) is 0 (Zero), +1 = Double the Exposure or -1 = Half the exposure – ie. One stop high or one stop low.

A close friend of mine, he always opts to take -1 EV photos, which he says, is more pleasing to his eyes. !

Compare the three shots:

#. 1. With EV = 0

#. 2. With EV = -1

#. 3. With EV = +1

Hi @TravellerG wszystko jasne- światło, przesłona, ISO, bierzesz aparat fotograficzny do ręki, wchodzisz w PASM i ustawiasz. A z telefonem wcale ale to wcale nie mogę sobie poradzić. Przy dziennym świetle coś tam wychodzi, ale tylko wtedy, gdy jest naprawdę jasno. No i to chyba wada modelu - czy ktoś próbował LG K100? Bo u mnie albo za ciemno albo zielone :)) Pozdrawiam

  1. WOW…dear @AlexaAC , I would honestly tell you…This is an excellent shot.

  2. I am really happy that Person has responded to my request, in LG Connect - thanks. Can I request you to Shoot a ‘Doll’ with the light of a light “Candle”, you will be thrilled to see your own shot … All the best…

  3. If you could look at the “Information” (In S9 Plus, open Gallery, open any photo, click on 3 Dots at right-top, Open “Details” = You will get Aperture, ISO & Shutter Speed, etc) & give the EXIF Data,** **please…it can help many & promote many to take the advantage…

LG K100 is a good Mobile above the basic model, but the camera may have limitations for a manual mode.

Hey @TravellerG ,

Thanks for another great post! I like how you present photography terms in brief, with simple words.

From the three photos you shared, I like the one with EV +1 best. The brightness makes it more beautiful and pleasing to my eyes.

Can you give examples in what situations is better to use which exposure value?

Thanks, dear @DeniGu

Can you give examples in what situations is better to use which exposure value?

Its very simple…

Its a “Just a matter of pleasantness to your eyes”. This has no technical importance, like Aperture or ISO…

But, this is very important in "Presenting your Photo to others; brilliantly light photos will have more effect than a dull light photo - hope, you are clear,

Thanks once again…

Thanks for the reply, @TravellerG !

It’s good to know that I need to rely mostly on my perception of what makes a beautiful photo, rather than on technical knowledge.
