Pepper elder - edible plant

I did not plan to write an article about this plant but yesterday I talked to a local guide from Bangladesh and he said he never knew this plant is edible. So I am compiling this up.

The restaurant put Pepper Elder in the Steak - the combintion tastes wonderful

I am introducing the edible plant grow in Cambodia which is called ក្រសាំងទាប read as [Krosaing Teab].

Local Name Common name Scientific names Regions they grow
ក្រសាំងទាប read as [Krosaing Teab]. Pepper Elder, some call them shining bush plant, and man to man. It is also known by many names which are: Clearweed, Consumption weed, Rat ear, rabbit ear, Silver bush, Vietnamese crab claw, Slate pencil plant, Pansit-pansitan and peperomia Peperomia pellucida Asia and Americas:
Grow in forests, rock crevices, bases of cliffs, open forests, around nurseries, greenhouses, degraded forest areas, wastelands, wet places within forests, shaded woods, around nurseries and greenhouses, along coastal plain, wooded rocky hillsides, flooded water courses, woodlands

It grows just anywhere around Cambodia and I love just how beautiful it is. The stem looks like the glass, very clear.

Plant characteristics: the plant is not very big - they are about 15-30cm.

  • Succulent stems,
  • Shiny, heart-shaped & fleshy leaves,
  • Tiny, dot-like seeds attached to several fruiting spikes

Where it grows:

  • They grow in shaded and damp habitats all over Asia and the Americas.
  • They grow in clumps, thriving in loose, humid soils and a tropical to subtropical climate.

Edible and health benefits

  • The plant is edible both raw and cooked [raw as salad, cooked ca be done like stir fried with beef]
  • The benefits of this plant can cool down temperature in the body and can maintain good health if you eat a lot. They are partly helping for treatment of abdominal pain, abscesses, boils, colic, fatigue, headache. Moreover, according to Dad on the Move, these plants actually can do many things for better health including help treat gout, relieve rheumatism, address hypertension, treat renal disorders such as urinary tract infection and cure pimples when mashed and applied topically to affected areas.

@NasimJoy now you know it is edible :slightly_smiling_face: thanks for the inspiration for me to write this.

@Sophia_Cambodia Haven’t seen this plant before. Does it taste peppery? There are so many delicious local herbs and shrubs that many don’t know of. Learning some of these will be most helpful.

It does have smell but I don’t know how to tell it @StephenAbraham right, it is like pepper but kinda weird, not unpleasant though - some says it has a mustard-like odor when crushed

Great photos with great explanations. I am truly glad to see you become a connect moderator, congratulations @Sophia_Cambodia
