I recently had the blessing to visit Parumala Church, one of the most well-known pilgrimage centers in Kerala. The church, which comes under the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, is dedicated to St. Gregorios of Parumala, also known as Parumala Thirumeni, the first canonized saint of the Church.
At the heart of the church lies the tomb of Parumala Thirumeni, where people come with prayers and devotion. The atmosphere inside and around the church is calm and peaceful, making it a place where you can sit quietly and reflect.
Parumala Thirumeni (1848–1902) lived a holy and humble life, spending much of his time in prayer, fasting, and guiding people in faith. Even after his passing, many believe that blessings and miracles are experienced through prayers at his tomb. In 1947, he was declared a saint, and since then, Parumala has become an important pilgrimage site under the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
Every year on November 2nd, the feast of Parumala Thirumeni is celebrated, drawing thousands of devotees. The church compound is beautifully maintained, with prayer halls and a quiet riverside view that adds to the spiritual mood.
Standing before the tomb of Parumala Thirumeni was a moving moment for me. Watching people light candles, pray silently, and seek blessings made me realize how deeply this place is connected to the faith of the people.
Parumala Church is not just a place of prayer but also a reminder of faith and devotion. Whether you are a pilgrim or simply traveling through Kerala, a visit here is truly worthwhile.
