Paravur, my village - A scenic spot located in Kollam

Paravur is my village. It is a scenic spot located in the district of Kollam.

Those who have traveled at least once on the Kollam-Thiruvananthapuram route by train could enjoy the beauty of Paravur like a minnow!

The beautiful village situated on the coast between Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. This municipality is on the tourism map along with Varkala and Kappil beaches. The village sharing its borders with Poothakulam Panchayat, Chathannur Panchayat and Mayyanad Panchayat.

The history of paravur has it that this place was a part of the 'Ay Kingdom’ known only through the Sangam period literature works and later became known as Paravur after the word ‘Paravai Ayur’ was dropped. Paravur (Paravaiyur), the word also means the coastal region of the kingdom of Ay.

Paravur was a part of the ancient Pennarasunad, located in between Venad and Desinganad.

The ruling of Paravur and its bastions, pepper mill, etc. were under the control of Attingal Ammathampuratti.

The most important ancient documentary on the history of Paravur is the Pozhikkara Sasana, issued in the 12th century AD. All its records are kept in the Pozhikkara Major Devi Temple. In the old days, the administrative center of Paravur was the coastal beach. There is a lot of evidence for this.

The King’s Palace, the Pozhikkara Temple, which was renovated at the behest of the King, the adjoining inn. The Thanam, which replaced with the present police stations, and the first Anchalapees (Old post office) and the Court were located in this area.

Some remnants of these can still be seen.

Paravur is a land of temples and festivals. Around than 500 temples are located in Paravur Municipality including Puttingal Devi Temple.

It is also famous for its coir industry. You can also see small coir producingworks operating close to some houses.

There are two main estuaries in Paravur. One on the south side, on the Kappil side and the other on the Paravur Pozhikara. This is where the backwaters meet. Paravur and Nadayara lakes, which border the Arabian Sea on both sides and on the other side, are even more beautiful during the Paravur monsoon.

Pozhikkara pozhi and costal roads are located at a distance of about 2 km from the Paravur Railway Station and the bus stand.

This place is located at a distance of 14 km from the city of Kollam. Spread over an area of just 6.62 sq km. Paravur Lake is also the confluence of the Ithikkara River. The lake is well connected to the Edava and Ashtamudi lakes and offers boating facilities.

National water way passing through Paravur.

The Paravur South-Kappil Beach area attracts a large number of people for boating and enjoying the sunset. Priyadarshini Boat Club and the Lake Sagar Resort are offers opportunities for speed boating, windsurfing and kayaking.

Aqua Serene Resort, Fragrant Nature Resort and Tranquil Palms Resort are private resorts in Paravur.

The aerial view of Paravur-Varkala-Kappil Road between the sea and the lake is breathtaking. Traveling along this road is a rare experience, especially during the monsoons.

The nearby Polachira Swamp is also a popular destination for many migratory birds. Paravur is also an ideal destination for photography aficionados.

The old Pozhikkara Regulator (Cheep) and the bridge over it, which controls the backwaters by releasing water from the Paravur Lake to the Pozhikkara, are the window to the Paravur - Kollam Coastal Road. Through this road can be reached in just 15 minutes in Kollam

This road is now somewhat passable. But you can go through it and enjoy the beauty of the lake and the sea

You will not be disappointed if you go in preparation for fishing in the backwaters where the lake is rich in fish and carp. It is a common sight to see many people fishing on small baits in the catchment area that flows from the lake to the sea.

This is a short trip to Paravur, which can be visited in a day by people from nearby districts like Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.

After enjoying the sunset at Kappil Beach, tourists can cross the Kappil Bridge and return to Thiruvananthapuram or Kollam via Paravur - Chathannoor.

If you planning for an one day trip to see beautiful landscape, I surely advise you to choose Paravur.
