Hullo fellow Guides!
I’m Luca, a New York local guide super passionate about Maps and all it has to offer. I use it extensively to find all the quirky ins and outs of this busy city. However today I’m here to write about my solo getaways.
The last few years i’ve traveled extensively through US, Europe and Northern Africa. I tend to take my holiday entitlement in large chunks so that I can squeeze a few destinations into one trip, and I usually travel for a specific reason in mind. Last year for example I landed in London to see friends, grabbed a flight to Madrid for gay pride celebrations with other acquaintances, and then darted off to Greece to soak up some culture.
The last leg of the trip I was by myself however. I was driving by myself, and planning the holiday all on the go.
I did a lot! and Maps was indispensable. It really just left enough ‘breadcrumbs’ for me to want to explore more, but also was the most reliable tool for getting around, parking and finding some accommodation. None of my recent trips travelling by myself would have been possible without it.
I wanted to share one of my most beautiful finds. The town of Monemvasia in the Greek PEloponnese - see photos below. Completely unexpected beauty of a place. A long strip of land jutting out into the Aegean Sea.
What used to be a fortified town is now a charming place for exploration in the long, winding alleys, cafes and welcoming inhabitants. Superb food. It was also a very satisfying trek up to the old town - which is now derelict and an ancient type of water collection system.
I’m still refining the art of traveling alone. It is a satisfying experience but can also be a stressful ordeal to get all of your organization done on the go and have no one else to rely on. Any tips from you guys most welcome.
BTW I have come across a website I will be using in the future where they pair single travellers together
https://www.flashpack.com/us/ Sounds interesting. (By the way I am not selling anything, i just thought it might be useful to some people out there).
Thanks for stopping by…and follow more of my travels and city meanderings on insta under name ‘loocatme’.
