Last 2019 just before Easter, I had the opportunity to visit a small town in Aegean Macedonia called - Edessa. It is a small town with a population of about 18 250 inhabitants, it was once a Bulgarian town and was called “Voden”. A river called Vodas passes through the town and feeds the two large waterfalls, one waterfall is about 30 meters high.
A nice city park has been built near the waterfalls, where there is free parking.
Local residents claim that the waterfalls were formed during a severe earthquake in 1395 and the rocks behind one of the waterfalls formed an interesting cave. The cave is not big, but it is very beautiful.
Behind the large waterfall there is a terrace and one can stand behind the water jet and enjoy the splashes and the view.
There is a path that is part of the park and it goes down at the foot of the waterfall.
The waterfalls in Edessa are suitable for lovers of nature, water, greenery and coolness!
Has anyone heard of the small village of Vergina, where is the tomb of some of the most notable rulers of ancient Macedonia? If you haven’t heard, come with me now and I’ll tell you.
Vergina is a village with about 1246 inhabitants, located 75 km from Thessaloniki. The ancient name of the village is Aigai.
Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronicos in 1977-1978 discovered two very rich tombs associated with the dynasty of the Macedonian kings. One tomb was of Philip II of Macedon. He is the father of Alexander III Macedonian Great. The second tomb is of a child and is believed to be the child of Alexander the Great - Alexander IV.
The whole complex is built as a small park. At the heart of the park is an earth dome under which are the tombs and the museum. The place is very nice and peaceful.
After the excavations were completed, a museum was built. The museum of the tombs can be seen objects found during the excavations - vessels, a gold wreath of oak leaves and acorns made of 24 carat gold, a gold urn in which the bones of the king, armor of gold and ivory were stored bone, silverware and more.
Unfortunately I was not able to take any pictures inside because taking pictures with any camera is forbidden.I tried to take a picture of Philip of Macedon’s tomb, but the result came out…, but you can see them internet.
The inhabitants of the village are small, but there is a lot of life around the tombs - there are restaurants, souvenir shops. In establishments, it is not expensive to sit down to have a good meal.
It was very interesting for me to visit these places!
I hope it was interesting to everyone with my virtual walk to the waterfalls of Edessa, and to the world of the ancient kings in ancient Macedonia.
Να ‘σαι Καλά !
