One of the oldest Banta Soda brands in Delhi

Banta Soda, the popular, lemon or orange-flavoured carbonated soft drink sold since the late 19th century is packaged in an iconic, thick glass Codd-neck bottle with a marble stopper that creates a seal when the bottle is pressurized.

The concept of Codd-neck bottles for carbonated drinks began to emerge in Mumbai during the late 19th century, thanks to Parsi entrepreneurs who established the first soda factories in the city. The Codd-neck bottle, which is essential to Banta soda, was invented in 1872 by Hiram Codd. It later became widespread in India, leading to the development of Banta soda in various regions including Delhi.

Shankar Ganga Soft Drinks Pvt. Ltd. is one of India’s oldest and most trusted Banta Soda brands, serving refreshing desi sodas for more than 100 years. Born in the vibrant heart of Chandni Chowk, Delhi, in 1920, its legacy is built a nostalgic beverage that has united generations. In recent years they have introduced many flavours but nothing beats the original Banta!

We recently came across a stall of Shankar’a at the second oldest Durga Puja in Delhi- The Timarpur and Civil lines Puja.

The younger generation has definitely added a lot of Zing to the brand. To our disappointment the Soda was served from a PET bottle in a disposable glass. The Codd-neck bottles here were just for “show”. Nothing spectacular about the taste but sheer nostalgia made up for it!

Banta Soda, also more commonly known as Goti Soda, for the marble cap is common in Pune and Aurangabad as well.

Banta Soda or Goli Soda brings up so many nostalgic memories @curatorofmemory Though when it’s served in PET bottles it’s definitely disappointing. Thanks for sharing this amazing post on the oldest Banta Soda shop

Sir due to feasibility and logistic challenge Banta in Glass bottle was not available during the Puja otherwise we have it. These Bottles are quite heavy. We were having Banta in PET Goli bottle in 4 different flavor. These are also available on our website lemonwale.com Thanks Again Sir !
