One of the most northern churches on earth.

The Arctic Cathedral in Tromso, Norway or Tromsdalen Church, also known as Ishavskatedralen, is one of the most northern churches on earth. It’s a very modern and beautiful church built in an architecture inspired by Arctic nature. It’s also a landmark building visible from the Tromso Sound, the Tromso Bridge and even when you’re landing at Tromso airport. The photo below shows a view of the Arctic Cathedral (bottom right) from the Tromso Bridge and also the background scenery in which the Cathedral is set.

Wow @AdamGT ,

I saw your photo and did know with once where it is. Over twenty years ago I did not live far away from Tromso (in Norwegian understanding of distance  ) and is was the church I did visit every time when I was there!

In fact on the mountain you are showing in the background, I first time in my life did fear about my life, because I did something VERY stupid (not to repeat here) and I have had the church as a focus point to say me, that I need to trust. So, after I managed to come out of this, I went to the church and stayed there in several hours.

Thank you!

HI @TorM

It sounds like you have an interesting story that cannot be repeated here but have no fear @TorM as being a hiker/trekker/mountain kind from way back myself, we all have such stories. It’s a beautiful church that you found to trust and for the support you obviously needed at the time.

Hi @AdamGT

Wow that is beautiful! Scandinavia has really original and unique architecture. Being from Finland I can confirm  , but especially Norway.

I’ve seen a show about their unique buildings and how the nature is taken into a consideration when building each and everyone. So it’s not surprise this church is in Norway. How did you enjoy Tromso? I would love to visit Norway.

Thank you @DanniS

Oh how I totally agree with you, Scandinavia is just soooo beautiful. Lots of really original and unique architecture and as you say, very much influenced by nature. I believe that the building design of the beautiful Arctic Cathedral, although it’s a church and not a cathedral, was very much influenced by sheets of ice which I find fascinating. I’ve just added another photo to the post which better shows the sloping sheets of ice-like roof form.

Tromso was a beautiful place, as was Gravdal and even more so Honningsvåg (North Cape). You must visit Norway and gosh, you’re in Finland, luckily not so far for you. @DanniS you’ve prompted me now so I will post a photo from Honningsvåg.

@bmuu Thanks for adding the last photo! Wow, it’s really amazing indeed! I’m definitely looking forward to the time when I can visit Norway. In Finland, the architecture is also quite influenced by the nature as well. They really appreciate eco-houses and container houses as well, and there are many unique buildings done in rocks or in wood to preserve nature.

This is a Chapel in the center of Helsinki, a contemporary church chapel with a minimalist wooden interior, built for silent reflection.

That’s a chapel? It looks amazing Amazing @DanniS . Do you have a photo of the interior? I love the minimalist look of buildings and their interiors as well as lots of Scandinavian furniture that I have seen.

@AdamGT

No, unfortunately I didn’t take photos from the inside, but on my previous message, I included a Google Maps link to the Chapel where you might see a photo from the inside

I love Scandinavian design, also interior. Everything is minimalistic like you mentioned and clean.

Oh @DanniS it’s magic!! I’ve just had a look inside and it’s got Scandinavian design all over it. I love the internal wall(s), the ceiling and the chapel bench seats.

Totally agree that this church is a landmark. It’s so easy to recognise the place by it.

The church looks a bit differently on the background of dark mountains without snow. When were you there, @AdamGT ?

As well as the design, what I liked about the “Cathedral” (in quotes because of course it’s a church and not a Cathedral) is that it is visible from just about anywhere, and even from very distant locations…Oh good question @YuliiaZa . I’ve been there twice, first time in 2017 and I liked it so much that I went back again in 2018. I have a number of Maps reviews and Connect posts about these trips still in the pipeline. Sadly it’s a long pipe…there just aren’t enough hours in the day :joy: Are you local there?

@AdamG , asking about the time of visit I meant a month so that to compare the views in different seasons.

No, I’m not a local there at all though I wouldn’t mind spending more time there)) I live in Ukraine.

Oh I’m sorry @YuliiaZa I misunderstood your question. I took the photo of the church, as the one below, was taken, in July. Oh I too would love to spend a lot more time in Norway but then again also, Denmark, Sweden and Finland lol.

@AdamGT , I guess I’d love those three other Scandinavian countries to but I haven’t visited them yet. They are in my indefinite future plans as their nature, architrcture and design are very in line with my tastes.

Beautiful! @AdamGT I love how they built it with a more modern style. It really makes a statement and stands out from the scene.
