One Accessibility Webinar on Contributing More Meaningfully On Maps

And another one! We had an amazing session discussing accessibility, local guides, and google maps. While you can check out @EmekaUlor’s official recap, I thought I would share my personal experience.

I and Juliet were the official host of this webinar. We came in expecting wonderful insights from @Kristen_NYC and left with a deep knowledge-sharing and feedback session.

Three things that touched my heart during this session:

  • How passion Kristen (being a Googler) is about being a local guide and the local guides program. I think it’s wonderful when you have someone within that understands the experience we go through.

  • How embedded accessibility is within Google from the start, with people with disabilities being part of the team. This was a recommendation in our previous webinar, and hearing that conversations surrounding accessibility are already being had at the ideation stage reassured attendees that the future is bright.

  • The emphasis on empathy and a community during this time. The way to have a more accessible and inclusive world is through empathy – not simply feeling concern for someone’s difficulty or experience but understanding and putting yourself in their shoes. I also noted that community is the latest buzzword and trend ~ many people want to either be a part of a community or create their own community that aligns with their purpose, values, and/or identity. Which is great, because this means local guides connect is way ahead of its time!

The time went by so quickly, and I would have honestly liked another hour but we had to say our goodbyes and end the event!

I have a deep appreciation for our awesome attendees and for reconnecting with both familiar and new faces (always brings smiles). I would love to meet you all at some point, and this is an open invitation to Nigeria (specifically my beloved city, Owerri in Imo State)! No matter the week or month, I will make time if I am around!

Shout out to the One Accessibility team: @EmekaUlor @Jesi @ChinonsoOnukwugha and @Julietezego – you all are awesome!
