Nawab Mahabat Jang who belonged to the Afshar dynasty, was a Shia Muslim. the Najafi dynasty took over the rule after assassinations of Nawab Siraj Ud Daulah in 1757 AD and all of them were Shia Muslims. Murshidabad was the capital and the foundation stone of this famous Imambara was laid by Alivardi Khan or Mahabat Jang or by Siraj Ud Daulah in the Qila Nizamat complex.
In this Grand Imambara timber was extensively used in its construction. This was entirely damaged by the fire incidents occurred in 1842 and 1846 AD.
According to the details provided by the Archaeological Survey of India
This largest Imambara (207 m) of Bengal was built during the time of Nawab Nazim Fardun Jah in 1847 AD under the supervision of Syed or Sadeq Ali Khan at a cost of six lakh rupees. Only six to seven months were required to complete this monumental construction. This rectangular building is divided into three equal blocks, each with a larger square. The central quadrangle, which is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, has a single-domed medina on a square platform in the center and is surrounded on all sides by a large landmass and prayer shrine. It was built to replace the famous Imambara built by Siraj-ud-Daula and decorated in the same fashion. Surroundings verandahs are for Members, Naubat Khana etc and these verandahs are supported by circular arches. It has three gates.
Imambara is different from Mosque as here congregation held by Shia muslims for mourning known as Aza especially in the Muharram month on 10th of this month the beloved grandson of Prophet (pbuh) Hazrat Imam Hussain Radiyallahu Tala Anho achieved the martyrdom at Karbala with entire family including 6 months childrens. Karbala is sacred city located in Iraq.
