Opened in 1927 by Britishers for the easy movement of Teak wood to the nearest port. Nilambur-Shornur railway line is still one of the few remaining single line traffic in Kerala.
During World War II, the Shoranur line, along with other numerous railwaysw dismantled and rolling stock diverted to the Middle East to help British war efforts. The line ceased to exist in 1941. After independence, the railway line was reconstructed by the Indian Railways along its original alignment.
