Nijhum Dwip: Bangladesh’s Hidden Island Paradise Waiting to Be Explored

Nijhum Dwip, meaning ‘Silent Island’ in Bengali, is a tranquil island located in the Bay of Bengal under Hatiya Upazila of Noakhali District, Bangladesh. The Island has emerged as a unique eco-tourist spot, attracting visitors with its untouched natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and serene environment. The island is accessible by boat, with routes connecting it to nearby islands and the mainland. Travelers often embark from Monpura’s Fish Terminal in the Bhola district, with the journey taking approximately two and a half hours by trawler. Nijhum Dwip’s combination of rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and tranquil landscapes makes it a captivating destination for those seeking to experience the natural beauty of Bangladesh. I recently visited the mesmerizing island and wants to share some photos with you:








To travel from Dhaka to Nijhum Dwip, you have several options, combining both land and water transportation. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Option 1: Launch and Boat via Hatiya

  1. Dhaka to Hatiya by Launch:
  • Launches depart from Dhaka’s Sadarghat Launch Terminal at around 5:00 PM, heading towards Hatiya.
  • The journey takes approximately 13-15 hours, with the launch arriving at Hatiya’s Tomoroddi Ghat between 6:30 AM and 8:30 AM the following day.
  1. Hatiya to Nijhum Dwip:
  • Upon arrival at Tomoroddi Ghat, you can hire a motorbike taxi or an auto-rickshaw to reach the ferry ghat at the southern tip of Hatiya Island.
  • The motorbike ride takes about an hour and costs around 350 BDT, while auto-rickshaws may charge between 600-800 BDT.
  • From the southern ferry ghat, take a 15-minute boat ride to cross over to Nijhum Dwip.
  • After reaching Nijhum Dwip, hire a motorbike or rickshaw to your accommodation or desired destination on the island.

Option 2: Bus and Boat via Noakhali

  1. Dhaka to Noakhali by Bus:
  • Buses depart from Dhaka’s Sayedabad, Tongi or Jigatala bus terminals, heading towards Shonapur in Noakhali.
  1. Noakhali to Hatiya:
  • From Shonapur, take local transportation to Chairman Ghat.
  • From Chairman Ghat, ferries are available to Hatiya Island.
  1. Hatiya to Nijhum Dwip:
  • Once on Hatiya Island, follow the same steps as mentioned in Option 1 to reach Nijhum Dwip.

I once went to Manpura Island and found that there is a daily In Toler departure at a specific time from Manpura Island to Nijhum Island though I don’t remember the exact time.
