Nigerian Palm Wine

Hello friends!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting up with @EmekaUlor at Old English Grill & Bar in Owerri, Nigeria. Despite the name, the place is actually known for its palm wine and traditional delicacies (e.g. nkwobi - peppery cow feet, assorted meat, crocodile, abacha - African salad, etc.). Palm wine is a drink commonly found in tropical locations and is retrieved from the sap of various types of palm trees. The beverage is often cloudy and whitish in colour (though I recently found out from Emeka that it can be darker) and has a sweet alcoholic taste as a result of being fermented. While palm wine can be found in various parts of the world, the taste varies from country to country.

The picture above illustrates the drink. I found out that Emeka is actually a connoisseur in palm wine (though he may be humble about it), and he educated me about different types. From our conversation, you should definitely try out spots in Mbaise, Imo State, Nigeria! From what I hear, it’s creme de la creme of all palm wines.

Overall, Emeka and I had a splendid time! We chatted about a range of topics and inevitably, we touched on the Google Local Guide world, #OneAccessibility series and how we can do more for the community both within and outside Nigeria. Emeka also taught me about 360 photos and ways to take awesome street pictures! If you’re in the area, definitely make a stop at this place and also try the gizzard! I could not get enough of it.

Let me know if you have any questions!

@ChinonsoOnukwugha Nice article on Palm Wine. How much do you have to drink to become inebriated?

Just joking

In India we make it out of coconut trees also.

** @ChinonsoOnukwugha **I am immensely grateful for choosing this location. Old English Grill & Bar is a great spot to visit. Situated in a comfortable area off the city centre. It’s quite satisfying I.could get some tastes of nice palmwine.

There different types of palmwine- from the raffia palm and palm tree. The most popular is that from the raffia palms. In my area, they tend to me strong and with some brown herbs mixed to give it some brown color.

The cold drinks and outdoor sitting was cool. The live catfish and most importantly the opporrtunity to meet you was a rewarding experience.

We should have palm wine tasting together soon?

Thanks for making it worthwhile and for your positivity :hugs:

Very nice! I love palm wine and used to drink a lot of it when I visited the east when I was younger. I live in the UK now and would like to find somewhere to get it here.

@ValerieF ah lovely. I’m sure you can search on Google map or Google and find some hidden gems!
