New way to select best category on Google Maps

Hello,

Starting today we are able to use a better selection tool for categories on Google Maps. At least it works on the Google Maps app right now.

Previously we had only one field to select a category from a shortlist or type a related phrase to see more. This was very sparse and many map editors knew this. It caused that many people select the wrong category because they only used options of this shortlist.

So I suggested a simple way to have a better selection for categories (In fact I separated it into parts due to the suggestion of Googlers to be clear enough). But now it seems Google not only implemented my suggestion but even made it more amazing and more complete.

Now we see a special page for selecting the category. It has some fields of categories on the main page and then we should select one to see its sub-categories and be able to select one. The main fields that also have icons, are nostalgic for me and reminds me of the early limited categories we had in the first years of Google Maps :slightly_smiling_face:

Even we have a search box on top of the category selection page with a background phrase that defines users they can search for more categories. It really helps users to now they can even select more categories by typing some phrases about their business or location they want to add.

Still, we don’t see this feature on Google Maps web and hope we have this interface globally, soon.

I say a big thanks to Google and Google moderators because of this amazing and really most needed improvement, and also for the Notifications Tab feature which is mentioned by @ErmesT , and Ihope we see also other needed features and improvements (like more reporting options for abusive profiles) in the future, too.

This is in the public version too @Amiran

They seem to reflect the GMB categorisation.

That’s a great tool @PaulPavlinovich

Thanks for letting me know about its global availability. I updated the text.

Hi @Amiran I’m not sure about global, it works in your region and it works in mine - it might be available elsewhere, I guess we’ll see when others comment on the post :slightly_smiling_face:

@PaulPavlinovich Right, but on the other hand, the kind of appearance shows it is a global change although I wait to see other comments and will do little change about its availability if needed.

Thanks @Amiran

Congratulations on having an Idea implemented. I bet your idea is not marked implemented!

I can confirm that it is also available in my part of Europe on Android.

Could it be that the lookup of more specific categories is more tolerant than the old one?

Cheers

Morten

Thank you @MortenCopenhagen for confirmation.

Not yet, But sure we reached the goal of the idea.

Still, The search box is available and the background phrase which refers to “more” relieves our concern, I think and I hope, but anyway, this new one is much better and causes fewer mistakes.

I suspect its part of the category changes that have been happening in GMB so Maps and GMB match @Amiran

Thanks for mentioning this change @PaulPavlinovich I’m not aware of any recent changes that happened on GMB cats and I’m really curious to know more but I’m sure this match you mentioned brought one simple needed feature to the Maps which helps for more accuracy. I just expressed my feedback as an idea and sure Googlers considers all feedbacks for changes even if they don’t directly implement one specific idea. The goal was the tool we have now in hand.

This is true @Amiran it doesn’t matter where it comes from :slightly_smiling_face:

Go find your idea and mention one of the Googlers in a comment and tell them it has been implemented so you can get an implemented idea to your credit.

Am I correct that when a major category is selected is does not serve as a filter to show only specific categories related to that major category?

Yes @MortenCopenhagen That’s totally correct. The search box is general and is not dependant on the major category we’re in. In my opinion, this is good.

I can confirm that I see it too. It is therefore quite clear now how my upcoming weekend will be spent  @Amiran

At first sight it looks much more intuitive to use for local guides not very experienced in the latter, so this will no doubt lead to less incorrectly attributed categories - meaning a cleaner map.

On the other hand, the first quick look also already revealed an issue: under Education, Secondary school is listed twice (one with the 2nd word capitalized, the other with a small s).

Ah the category man is about to have a fun weekend documenting the hierarchy - enjoy yourself @JanVanHaver and I feel a pod cast coming :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks a lot, dear @JanVanHaver for confirmation, and as you and @PaulPavlinovich also mentioned, I also was thinking of you as category expert and #LGCTM when I saw this feature.

Sure it results in a cleaner map but as we’ve little more free time by this feature, I think we’ll spend our weekends on other aspects of cleaning the map.

And about the education category, for years I thought it is only the Persian translation problem but seems it has wrong translations in other languages, too.

In fact, in English, these two listed as “High School” and “Middle School” which is correct but in Persian both listed is as “دبیرستان” while those should be:

High School: دبیرستان دوره دوم

Middle School: دبیرستان دوره اول

But seems the translation in the Dutch language isn’t accurate, too. So I think it needs the attention of Googlers especially since it is more accessible by this new interface.

Translation issues can be dealt with via Maps feedback @Amiran or via the Maps Support Community

Thanks, dear @PaulPavlinovich

I should put the time to prepare a good report for the support community that can be escalated without any trouble  But now, by knowing it is also wrong in more languages, I think it needs teamwork to prepare a more generic request.

I wonder if anyone could check if it’s also available on iPhone @Amiran , or only on Android. On desktop it is not - or at least not for me.
