New Maps feature: Select App Language

Hi fellow Local Guides

This morning the roll out of the new feature allowing us to set the the language used in the Android version of Google Maps reached my device.

I would like to share 3 screen shots showing how to find the new setting:

  1. First tap your Profile pic in the top right corner.

  2. Then tap Settings.

3 Then tap App language at the very top.

  1. Then select language and confirm as shown below.

This new feature is likely to make life easier for Local Guides making lots of Edits in more than one language.

Until now we often had to guess which name-line was which language and not always seeing two name-fields.

Google announced the new feature here.

Let’s share how we use the new feature below. Do you use it and do you like it?

Cheers

Morten

@MortenCopenhagen Most useful indeed for countries with many languages, will be much easier to switch languages without changing system wide settings.

Hi @StephenAbraham

I wanted to make the post short and to the point. So I chose not to credit you and Local Guides Daily for drawing my attention to this. I listened to your video podcast this morning, tested and knew the new feature should be explained on Connect

Thanks for the inspiration and sorry for not crediting you in the opening post.

Cheers

@MortenCopenhagen no need to mention that at all (for this and for any possible future information)… it’s not important… we are all just helping out ourselves and others… … only thanks to Google

Thanks for tuning in.

Thanks for sharing this @MortenCopenhagen @StephenAbraham .I will most certainly use this feature a lot (since I am now doing it the ‘elaborate’ way: change the phone language settings) in my efforts to correct POI categories and names.

The fact that this might be coming was one of the news items in a recent podcast episode, but I never imagined it would be available so soon.

So, do you see the App language settings in your phone also, @JanVanHaver ?

I have now had the opportunity to use App language for a little while.

  1. It is very convenient that after you change the language the app will restart automatically.

  2. When set to English we still get to see the Danish (local language) name field also. Just like before. This is also very convenient so we don’t need to swop the app language all the time (= for most edits).

  3. When creating a new POI and the language us set to English, we don’t get to also fill in the local language name like before. But changing the language is easy, so it is no problem to go back and fill in the local name also. Before I had to find min laptop to fix this.

All the best

Morten

I use the Maps messaging whenever that’s available @MortenCopenhagen

Today, I noted a glitch. When I switch from one language to other, the messages sent earlier do not remain visible after the changeover.

That’s annoying. Now I have to remember though which language mode I sent that and keep on switching.

Thanks @MortenCopenhagen for letting us know. So happy that it is now available globally. Sure, it is one of the most needed features that many users requested and it is very usefull.

Relevant to know, @C_T . Thanks.

Would it be practical for you to just decide to make all future messages in one language as a workaround?

Morten

Language is not important here @MortenCopenhagen

With multilingual keyboard, we can type in any language.

It’s as if the app creates a new session, ignoring the messages from earlier session through another language.

My point, @C_T , was for you to always use the same App language setting to keep your messages together.

Morten

Thanks brother @MortenCopenhagen . Always there is a surprise about the new features in the Map app.
