[New Idea] "Map Missions": Proactive, AI-Guided Contributions

Hi fellow Local Guides, Connect Moderators and Google Moderators :waving_hand:

Namaste from India :india:

As Local Guides, we all share the passion for improving the Google Maps experience, but what if we could take it one step further?

Imagine if Google Maps didn’t just rely on us to contribute randomly but instead proactively guided us to the areas where our contributions are needed the most. Picture this as a gamified quest that enhances both the map’s quality and the Local Guide experience.

Introducing “Map Missions” – a Revolutionary Step Forward!

Here’s how it could work:

  • A New “Missions” Tab: The Google Maps contributions section would have a dedicated “Missions” tab where Local Guides can check for personalized tasks in their vicinity.

  • AI-Powered Data Analysis: Leveraging AI, Google Maps would analyze the surrounding data and identify gaps, suggesting missions based on what’s most urgent or beneficial. A few example missions could be:

  • Data Freshness Mission: “You recently visited [Mall Name]. We haven’t had a photo of the food court in 6 months. Could you snap a picture the next time you’re there?”

  • Accessibility Mission: “There are several spots along [Street Name] that need accessibility details. Can you check for ramps and accessible restrooms this week?”

  • New Business Mission: “Our satellite imagery shows a new building on [Street Name]. Could you check it out and add it to the map as the first contributor?”

  • Gamification and Rewards: Completing these missions would not only make a significant impact but also earn us extra points and exclusive badges, further incentivizing us to participate and make a difference.

Why This Would Be Impressive:

“Map Missions” would completely transform the Local Guides program from a passive, reactive platform into an active, dynamic system for collecting critical data. By directing volunteers to high-priority tasks, it ensures that contributions are making the biggest difference, and in turn, boosts the quality of the maps at a much larger scale. It’s a truly strategic way of improving the entire mapping ecosystem, and it proves that we are actively thinking about the health of our beloved Google Maps.

Let’s take our contributions to the next level. Together, we can turn Map Missions into a driving force for positive change. :globe_showing_europe_africa::sparkles:

:globe_showing_europe_africa: What a visionary idea, @NandKK! “Map Missions” powered by AI has the potential to truly revolutionize how we contribute on Google Maps.

By strategically guiding Local Guides to areas that need attention — such as accessibility checks, photo updates, or new business verification — this initiative beautifully aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals:

  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – Encouraging contributions that improve urban planning, infrastructure visibility, and accessibility.
  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – Leveraging AI to innovate how geospatial data is crowdsourced and utilized.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Strengthening collaboration between tech platforms and citizen contributors.

Incorporating gamification and purpose-driven tasks not only motivates users but ensures their efforts have a direct and meaningful impact. Looking forward to seeing this idea gain momentum! :light_bulb::sparkles:

Thank you @SharmaK ji for vouching with this idea.

Indeed this idea is compatible with multiple SDGs.

Let’s see what is the opinion of our Googlers on this idea.

Excellent ideas, dear @NandKK
I feel sad that the previous ‘Ideas Section’ was closed from the old Connect.
If realized, these will be a huge impetus to Google Maps and a great enhancement to the gamification of this platform.
Brilliantly conceived and nicely put across :+1:

Thank you so much for the kind words and encouragement @TusharSuradkar ji.

Yes, I too miss the old ‘Ideas Section’—it was such a vibrant space for us to share our ideas.

I truly hope suggestions like these find a way to be explored or implemented. With passionate Local Guides and Connect Moderator like you supporting this idea, the journey feels even more exciting.

Let’s continue shaping the future of Google Maps together.
