When you’re navigating to a place, a new “Find Friends” icon appears.
Tap it, and you’ll see which of your friends are currently at that location, but only if they’ve chosen to be visible by turning on an “available” button. (Privacy is key!)
You can then send a quick “Hi” through the app.
Further chats would happen on your preferred messaging app, keeping Google Maps focused on navigation.
This could be incredibly useful for meeting up at events, in new cities, or just knowing when a friend is nearby at your travel point. It combines the utility of maps with the power of personal connection, all with user consent at its core.
