This post is the first of a series of two posts on Nouméa, the main city of New Caledonia. In this post I introduce you to different facets of the city where I was born and where I live today.
In the second post, I will provide you with useful information about this beautiful city and I will reveal the best addresses not to be missed!
Nouméa is in New Caledonia
Nouméa is the main city of New Caledonia, the French island in the South Pacific that I tell you about in "Why you should visit this little French Island? »
This small town of about 100,000 inhabitants is actually the largest French-speaking city in Oceania, ahead of Papeete (Tahiti).
Nouméa is known for its multicultural atmosphere, its sublime landscapes, its small paradisiacal islands and its superb beaches.
Its geographical location attracts visitors from Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the surrounding islands.
Nouméa is a peninsula
Walking in Nouméa is a real treat because the city is a peninsula and the sea is everywhere!
After their workday, the locals often go for a walk along the sea in specially designed areas such as Promenade Pierre Vernier.
The city has many beaches where you can swim, such as Anse-Vata Beach, Lemon Bay, Château Royal Beach, Kuendu-Beach.
For diving or just swimming, many very close islands are also accessible by taxi boat such as the Ilôt Maître, ilôt Canard, the Amédé lighthouse.
So here’s my shared list to spend good time to the beach: "Where go swimming in Nouméa?"
In Nouméa, it is good to live
The climate in New Caledonia is temperate and very sunny, the city of Nouméa enjoys the longest period of sunshine on the island. Temperatures are pleasant all year round and you can visit Nouméa at any time of the year.
However, I would advise you to come between September and November, which is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful seasons of the year.
As you can imagine, the locals love the sea and here many people practice outdoor sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, swimming, diving but also hiking, mountain biking, golf, tennis…(my friends @FaridTDF and @uavalentine , see we’ve love Kitesurf here too !)
Whether you are a nature lover or a sports fan, Nouméa offers you a wide choice of activities!
A French island
We speak French and we live French even though it is a small Pacific island far from France! Visits to monuments such as St. Joseph’s Cathedral confirm France’s cultural heritage since centuries.
When you come to Nouméa, you will immediately feel the French Savoir-Faire in the city’s restaurants, I have recently shared with friends @Giuseppe75, @user_not_found
and @Julien44 about it with this post "Café Gourmand sounds like delicious ! »
For the second part…
In my next post, I will reveal all the best addresses and must-see places if you visit Nouméa. In the meantime, if you have any questions about my city, feel free to ask me!
