New Animation and Icons in Google Maps (for reviews)

Hi everyone,

I came across this today when submitting a review and shared it with my fellow Connect Moderators. Apparently, they are seeing it too and is fairly new (if not new new!) so I wanted to share this with the lovely Connect community too!

When submitting a review, there’s now a new animation that pops up. I only have a screenshot at the moment but I’ll try and get a video made soon and will update this post to show it. The animation and icon is pretty cool and the other Connect Moderators are also showing different icon types based on the type of business that you’re reviewing.

I wrote a review for a cafe and I got an icon of a croissant! :croissant: :blush:

Which got me thinking… how many different icons do they have and can we ‘catch’ (aka document) them all!?!

Community challenge:

  1. Write a review and take note of the icon that you get (a screenshot will do and you can crop it to show just the icon if you like).
  2. Share the image here and let us know the business type that the review was for.

Tip: Try reviewing different business types and see how many types of icons you can get! And yes, please do write proper reviews that follow community guidelines and that are helpful! :sweat_smile:

Note: This new feature may not be globally available yet. I’m not in any special beta program but my app is at the latest version (26.13.06.887680004). Enjoy!

Reserved for future use.

Tagging @TusharSuradkar because he’s already found two different types!! Please share here! :blush:

Really interesting, my dear friend @AdrianLunsong
As of now, it is not active on my mobile…it may take time…
Thanks for sharing this…
Regards

Here are few more animated icon screenshots which I noticed after new updates on Google maps app. @AdrianLunsong

Nice post @AdrianLunsong . Even, I also noticed these new changes when I contributed to latest places I visited :+1:

It looks like you beat me @AdrianLunsong in posting these details. I have been noticing this even for the photo uploads since March 19th and have been collecting various animations and it varies based on POI categories.

Thank you for sharing this. Below was the first instance I observed on March 19.

Me salieron esos en las dos reseñas que hice…

Thanks for the challenge and tag @AdrianLunsong

I added a review for a botanical garden

Here’s the icon at the end of the animation. A sapling theme.

And the same star with an art theme, after I wrote a review for a “museum of art and photography”.

Vorab @AdrianLunsong, ich sehe es bei allem, was ich auf Google Maps hinzufüge oder ändere, und ich freue mich jedes Mal über die unterschiedlichen Darstellungen.:+1::wink:

I’ve shared the image of the curry rice emoji maybe this is Japanese recipe I received after posting my review.
@AdrianLunsong

I have found related to Gardens and Restaurants :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

So cool @AdrianLunsong I loved the croissant icon :heart_eyes:
Waiting for this update in my area.

A few days ago I got some …..

@AdrianLunsong

Very interesting @AdrianLunsong. I will try it later and thanks for the info!

so many new animations and iconi are introduced

@NareshDarji Can you share/confirm the category for the museum, river (?), salad, plate and sandwich icons? You have some unique ones that the rest have not captured! Thanks!
@Kumaarsantosh @TusharSuradkar @shaileno (is that rice on curry?) @mahatokoushik623 @Trishatishu

Thank you all for sharing the icons! So many cool ones! They remind me so much of GBoard Emoji Kitchen (someone has created a site that simulate’s the Emoji Kitchen) where it combines two different emojis to create new ones. This has that same fun factor where there are so many different icon types to discover!

I am also surprised at how niche some of them are like the ‘university library’ and there are multiple variants for different cafes (coffee, pastries, sandwiches, salads)!

I’ve updated place categories in the caption @AdrianLunsong

I think curry & rice separated in plate. @AdrianLunsong

This is such a cool find, @AdrianLunsong! :croissant::sparkles: I love how Google Maps is adding these little ‘Easter eggs’ to make reviewing more engaging.

I’ve been visiting several wellness spots and cafes, so I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the different icons that pop up :nerd_face:. I wonder if I’ll get a salad bowl for my next healthy meal review or maybe a dumbbell for my gym sessions? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes::flexed_biceps::green_salad: I’ll update here as soon as I ‘catch’ a new one! :camera_with_flash:
